Question 1

Who is Alicia Mathewson, and why do people care about her work?

Accepted Answer

Alicia Mathewson is a New England–based sound healer, singer, songwriter, and meditation teacher whose practice sits at the intersection of songcraft and spiritual devotion. She describes herself as a transformational singer/songwriter, built on 15+ years of teaching in yoga studios and festivals, where she developed a distinctive voice in contemporary mantra and chant music. What distinguishes her work is a deliberate blend of humor, sacred devotion, and plain songwriting craft—her songs and mantras don't traffic in New Age clichés but invite listeners to "relax, question, receive, connect and play." Listeners gravitate to her for her authentic approach to sound healing, which she frames as a practice that awakens people to their true nature. She owns Sounding Still Wellness and has developed a catalog of albums, mantras, and live experiences spanning from *Winds of Sinai* (2008) to recent releases like *Frequencies of Love Vol. 2* (2026). What particularly resonates with her audience is her willingness to integrate personal transformation—especially the loss of her mother—into her musical and spiritual practice, making her work feel lived-in rather than prescribed.

Question 2

Where should a complete newcomer start with Alicia Mathewson's work?

Accepted Answer

For listeners entirely new to Alicia Mathewson, starting with the *Frequencies of Love* series is advisable—particularly *Frequencies of Love Vol. 1* (2025) and *Frequencies of Love Vol. 2* (2026), her most recent and accessible mantra albums. These recordings distill her approach: songs and chants designed for meditation practice, yoga classes, and personal study, free of production excess. If you prefer to sample her songwriting alongside meditation music, *Be the Light* (2016) offers that blend—eleven tracks that balance vocal-forward compositions with healing intention. Another entry point is her YouTube channel, Sounds of Alicia, where you can experience her live chanting and teaching without a streaming subscription. For those curious about the full arc of her artistic voice, *12 Rebirth* (2019) shows her approach to thematic albums; the title itself signals her long-standing interest in cycles, transformation, and renewal. The recent single "888 (Everything is Magic)" (2024), recorded with pianist Allison Leyton-Brown in Toronto, offers a compact taste of her songwriting philosophy and collaborations.

Question 3

What makes Alicia Mathewson distinctive compared to other sound healers and chant leaders?

Accepted Answer

Unlike many contemporary sound healers who center ambient textures, electronic production, or minimalist bowl instruments, Alicia Mathewson places the human voice and traditional songwriting at the absolute center of her practice. Her songs and mantras blend humor and sacred devotion—a rare combination in meditation music that tends toward either reverence or whimsy, but not both. What's distinctive is her commitment to seasonal and cyclical work: for over a decade, she's sung at the winter and summer solstices, grounding her music in astronomical and agricultural rhythms rather than generic "spiritual" aesthetics. Her retreats at Creacon Wellness Retreat Center in Ireland (where she's been going for 18+ years) signal a deep, long-term engagement with a specific place and lineage of practice, not a one-off celebrity workshop circuit. Additionally, she integrates her own personal narrative—particularly the death of her mother—into her teaching and compositions, making the work therapeutic and biographical rather than merely prescriptive. Her background singing in yoga classes and festivals for 15+ years gives her music a grounded accessibility; she knows how her voice and chants actually *feel* in a body during practice, not just how they read as concepts.

Question 4

What are the essential Alicia Mathewson albums to know?

Accepted Answer

*Winds of Sinai* (2008) is her earliest major release and represents her foundational approach to compositional songwriting and healing music. *2012: Isn't It Amazing?* (2012) shows artistic maturation across thirteen tracks—a full statement of her artistic vision at that point. *Wise Innocence* (2015) and *Be the Light* (2016) form a pair of increasingly refined albums, with *Be the Light* standing out as particularly accessible for listeners new to her work. *12 Rebirth* (2019) is a conceptual album—twelve songs organized around themes of renewal and transition—and signals her deepening interest in thematic, album-length storytelling. The *Frequencies of Love* series, launching with *Vol. 1* (2025) and continuing with *Vol. 2* (2026), represents her most recent artistic phase and her most focused mantra work; these are explicitly designed for meditation, yoga, and healing contexts. The trajectory across these albums shows an artist moving from songwriting-heavy compositions toward simpler, more mantric structures—a natural evolution for someone whose primary practice is teaching students and leading retreats rather than pursuing radio play.

Question 5

What does Alicia Mathewson's music and mantras actually sound like?

Accepted Answer

Alicia Mathewson's vocal quality is warm and grounded, with a clarity that suggests trained breathing discipline—unsurprising given her background teaching in yoga. Her compositions span from sparse, unaccompanied voice to arrangements with piano (as on "888 (Everything is Magic)" with Allison Leyton-Brown) and other traditional instruments suited to mantra practice. The pacing is deliberately unhurried; these are not high-energy songs designed for playlists or gym workouts, but rather compositions that reward sustained listening and, in many cases, repetition during meditation or yoga asana. Her songs and mantras are melodic—they stick with you, which is essential for any mantra practice—but they avoid the cloying prettiness that plagues much devotional music. Song titles like "Structure/Flow," "love is happening," and "Cold Hard Stone" suggest a lyrical vocabulary that blends abstract spiritual concepts with tangible, embodied experience. What surprises newcomers is the presence of humor and plain language; her bio explicitly notes her work blends "humor, sacred devotion and plain, old-fashioned songwriting," which means you won't encounter Sanskrit-only compositions or overly ethereal production, but rather songs that feel both skillfully constructed and genuinely human.

Question 6

What are Alicia Mathewson's Frequencies of Love albums, and why are they significant?

Accepted Answer

*Frequencies of Love Vol. 1* (released September 9, 2025) and *Frequencies of Love Vol. 2* (released June 21, 2026) represent Alicia Mathewson's most recent and most mantra-focused work, marking a deliberate turn toward music explicitly designed for meditation and healing practice. Each album comprises collections of mantras and chants distilled from her 15+ years of teaching in yoga classes, studios, and festivals—so these are tested, lived-in practices rather than new-age experiments. The series title itself signals her understanding of sound healing through a lens of vibrational frequency; she's not making this mystical claim loosely, but rather describing what happens when voice, intention, and repetition align in a practice space. The two volumes suggest an ongoing series, indicating she's treating mantra composition as her primary artistic focus now. *Vol. 2* was released on the summer solstice (June 21), underscoring her long-standing commitment to seasonal music and cyclical practice. For students and teachers seeking mantra recordings that honor both the depth of traditional practice and the accessibility of contemporary life, these albums have become essential resources. They avoid the trap of overly produced or background-music-style mantras by keeping her voice central and allowing space for sustained practice.

Question 7

Who is Alicia Mathewson's work NOT for?

Accepted Answer

Alicia Mathewson's music is not suited for listeners seeking high-energy, rhythmically complex, or electronically produced sound healing. If you're drawn to ambient synth work, binaural beats, or fast-paced mantra chanting (think Kirtan-style call-and-response), her sparse, vocal-forward approach may feel too minimal or too personal. Her work also won't appeal to practitioners seeking purely instrumental sound baths or bowl meditation; her albums place the human voice first, and she's a singer-songwriter at heart, which means lyrics and songcraft are central. If you prefer spirituality entirely stripped of humor or personal narrative, her deliberate integration of playfulness and her openness about grief (particularly her mother's death) might feel too emotionally direct. Additionally, her music draws from yoga and meditation traditions but doesn't center Sanskrit exclusively or adopt heavily Vedic frameworks, so purists seeking lineage-based, Sanskrit-only chant practice may find her work more Western-secular than they're seeking. Finally, listeners with very low patience for simplicity or repetition—mantra practice demands accepting the same melody and words across long takes—may not connect with this particular practice.

Question 8

What is Alicia Mathewson's connection to solstice ceremonies and seasonal music?

Accepted Answer

For over ten years, Alicia Mathewson has sung at the winter and summer solstices, making seasonal marking a core element of her identity as a sound healer and meditation teacher. This practice isn't incidental or decorative; it signals her understanding of healing music as intertwined with natural cycles, astronomical rhythms, and communal ceremony. Her solstice retreats at Creacon Wellness Retreat Center in Ireland—a place she's been visiting for 18+ years—have become pilgrimage-like experiences for students seeking to ground their practice in place and seasonal transition. The solstice focus reflects a lineage of practice common to Western energy work and neo-pagan ceremonialism, though her approach integrates songwriting craft and rigorous meditation teaching alongside it. The release date of *Frequencies of Love Vol. 2* (June 21, 2026) on the summer solstice underscores how consciously she aligns her recording releases with these turning points. What's significant is that she doesn't treat solstice work as a separate activity from her studio practice; seasonal song and studio composition are part of the same practice of attunement. This commitment to ceremony alongside technology (recordings, streaming, live performance) makes her work appealing to practitioners seeking an alternative to purely digital or studio-bound sound healing.

Question 9

What instruments and collaborators does Alicia Mathewson work with?

Accepted Answer

While the available data on her specific instrumental arrangements is limited, we know that Allison Leyton-Brown, pianist, collaborated with her on "888 (Everything is Magic)" (2024), recorded in Toronto. Piano appears to be a consistent accompaniment instrument, fitting for both songwriting-forward compositions and mantra practice. Her work with Sounding Still Wellness and her 15+ years teaching in yoga classes suggests she's likely worked with traditional mantra instruments suited to meditation environments, though specific details aren't extensively documented in her public discography. Her approach appears to prioritize vocal and acoustic instrumentation over electronic production or synthesizers, which aligns with her stated commitment to sound healing and human voice. The fact that her discography lists no extensive producer credits or instrumental lineups suggests she may handle much of the arrangement and recording work independently or with close collaborators. For more detailed information on specific recordings and session musicians, her website (aliciamathewson.com) and Spotify pages likely contain album notes and credits. What's clear is that she favors instrumental choices that complement rather than obscure the voice—a priority consistent with her teaching practice.

Question 10

What role did Alicia Mathewson's mother play in her work?

Accepted Answer

Alicia Mathewson has been open about how her mother influenced her as a musician and how the loss of her mother has become central to her spiritual and artistic practice. In her own words, "much of her musical and spiritual journey is tied to losing her." This isn't presented as abstract grief-tourism but as lived transformation. She writes that "her whole life has been about transitions and transformation," and the death of her mother appears to be both catalyst and ongoing teacher in that process. Her music has developed, she notes, "a special way of guiding her and others through change in a loving, joyful and peaceful way"—suggesting that her mother's death was the crucible in which she learned to hold grief and healing together. This biographical grounding makes her work distinct from sound healers who present their practice as untethered from personal narrative. Albums like *12 Rebirth* and songs like "This Love" take on added resonance when understood through this lens: they're not generic invitations to transformation but invitations rooted in her specific experience of loss and renewal. Her willingness to speak about her mother's influence, rather than veiling it in spiritual language, makes her practice more accessible and trustworthy to students navigating their own loss.
