Ethan Nichtern is a Buddhist teacher and author. Since 2002 he has taught meditation and Buddhist psychology classes and workshops in New York City, across North America and in Europe, and he also works with students privately. He has studied primarily in the Shambhala and other Tibetan traditions, along with Theravadan and Soto Zen Buddhism, and he is an avid yoga practitioner. From 2010 to 2018 he served as Shastri, or Senior Teacher-in-Residence, at the Shambhala Meditation Center of New York.
His books include The Road Home: A Contemporary Exploration of the Buddhist Path, which was selected as one of Library Journal's Best Books of 2015, and The Dharma of The Princess Bride: What The Coolest Fairy Tale of Our Time Can Teach Us About Buddhism and Relationships. His newest book, Confidence: Holding Your Seat Through Life's Eight Worldly Winds, was released in June 2024 and won the 2025 Nautilus Awards Gold Medal for Eastern Thought. Earlier work includes One City: A Declaration of Interdependence and the novella and poetry collection Your Emoticons Won't Save You.
In 2007 he founded the Interdependence Project, a nonprofit dedicated to secular Buddhist practice and transformational activism and arts, and he served as its executive director until 2011. He hosts The Road Home podcast, launched in 2018, which brings guests from art, science, psychology and activism into a contemporary exploration of Buddhist teachings. He also teaches a yearlong Buddhist studies course online.
Ethan was formerly on the part-time faculty at Eugene Lang College at New School University and has lectured at Brown, Wesleyan, Yale, NYU, FIT, Antioch and other universities. He has been featured on CNN, NPR, The New York Times, Vogue.com and Vice to discuss Buddhism and meditation in the 21st century. He is based in Brooklyn, where he lives with his daughter.
Worth Knowing
Ethan Nichtern is a Brooklyn-based Buddhist teacher, author, and podcaster who has been teaching meditation and Buddhist psychology since 2002. He's known for making Buddhist thought accessible to secular, contemporary audiences—not by watering it down, but by anchoring classical teachings in real modern anxieties: relationship trouble, career uncertainty, political despair, creative block. His appeal lies in his refusal to separate spiritual practice from everyday life; he teaches that Buddhism isn't an escape from the world but a set of psychological tools for engaging with it more skillfully. Students seek him out because he treats meditation and Buddhist psychology as rigorous disciplines with provable effects on how you think and act, not as wellness fads. His Shambhala training and multi-tradition Buddhist background (Tibetan, Theravadan, Soto Zen) gives him depth; his ability to reference The Princess Bride, yoga, and contemporary activism in the same sentence gives him accessibility. After decades in the field, he's become a trusted interpreter of Buddhism for thinking people who are suspicious of both fundamentalism and empty spirituality.
