Witness Consciousness: Seeing vs.Looking in Spiritual Practice

A meditator sits quietly, alert and earnest, watching for thoughts and emotions to arise. When they do, she practices observing them neutrally, deciding whether to let them go or push them down. Months pass. She feels more anxious than before, more aware of every ripple in her mind, more trapped. She writes to her teacher: "I'm witnessing. I'm witnessing. I see what's going on in there and I'm really getting uptight. I'm really having trouble." This is one of the most widespread and misunderstood problems in contemporary spiritual practice. And Michael Singer, author of The Untethered Soul and teacher of the distinction between consciousness and mind, identifies its root with surgical precision: she is not witnessing. She is looking. And that, he argues, is something entirely different.

The Difference Between Seeing and Looking

The words seem nearly synonymous. "I'm looking at you. I'm seeing you." But Singer draws a distinction so fundamental it alters how a practitioner should approach consciousness itself. Seeing, he explains, is passive. It happens by itself, with no will involved. A camera sees. You walk into a room and your eyes register a person in a bright shirt without effort, without judgment, without touching the information. Seeing is receptive, innocent, effortless.

Looking, by contrast, has intention behind it—will, purposefulness, direction. "I'm looking for something," Singer says. When you look, you are using the instrument of your awareness with intention, searching for something specific, usually something you want or want to avoid. Both may use the same sensory apparatus—the eyes, in the external example—but the quality of consciousness in each is radically different.

Here is where the teaching cuts into the heart of spiritual practice: most people who think they are developing witness consciousness are actually practicing looking. They are watching their minds to see if thoughts are "okay," if emotions are "pure," if experiences are moving them toward enlightenment. This watchful surveillance creates the very tension they are trying to transcend. A gatekeeper has taken up residence in consciousness—a layer of mind examining other layers of mind, filtering, judging, deciding. And the more refined and spiritual that gatekeeper becomes, the more sophisticated its scrutiny, the further one moves from what Singer calls the true witness.

The Gatekeeper's Paradox

Singer names this phenomenon explicitly: the spiritual ego gatekeeper. It arises especially in practitioners who have worked seriously with meditation or inner awareness. The gatekeeper sits at the threshold of consciousness, inspecting each thought and emotion as it arises. Is this okay? Is this right? Is this clean? Is this serving my spiritual growth? The gatekeeper is sincere, well-intentioned, even refined—and it is a prison.

What the gatekeeper does not understand is that the moment you catch a thought or emotion to decide what to do with it, you have interrupted the natural flow. You have created an "it," a thing to be managed. The teaching is subtle and crucial: there is a vast difference between thoughts and emotions passing through unnoticed and you catching them and then deciding to let them go. Both might look like "witnessing," but one is mind doing something, and the other is simply the absence of doing.

Singer offers a stark image: "If you're looking for something, there will be tension because you're actually looking for it to be a certain way." The person who meditated and now feels more anxious was creating that tension herself, moment by moment, through the act of looking. She was catching her experience and judging it, all while believing she was developing witness consciousness. In fact, she was building a more sophisticated version of the same ego-mind that had always run her life.

What True Witness Consciousness Actually Is

So what does the true witness look like? Singer offers an almost mundane example: a camera sees you. There is no camera deciding, no camera evaluating, no camera trying to make you be different from what you are. It simply registers. It is recording. "There's nobody doing anything," Singer says of this state. You are noticing that experience comes up and passes through. You are not touching it. You are not catching it. You are not rationalizing it—telling yourself "I'm okay, my thoughts are higher than before, I'm making progress."

When this truly happens, Singer describes something that sounds less like peace and more like overwhelming aliveness: ecstasy. Energy moves through without obstruction. There is "a rush of this ecstasy, this flow of energy making it through without touching anything." He invokes a poem describing the state as "throng upon throng, wave upon wave of endless ecstasy saturating day and night." These are not idle poetic flourishes, he emphasizes. This is the literal energetic experience of consciousness flowing through a human being without interference.

The paradox is that the moment the mind says "Oh, I used to feel this," the moment it catches the ecstasy and comments on it, it stops. Singer recalls his own experience in the early 1970s: he first saw light in meditation, felt it opening in the third eye region, and the moment his mind said, "Oh, there it is"—it was gone. The gatekeeper snatched it. This pattern repeats itself infinitely, which is why truly liberated beings, Singer notes, are those who have let go entirely of the gatekeeping function. Everything that comes up passes through them, and they remain unmoved and undivided.

Evolution Through Surrender, Not Filtering

How does one move from the gatekeeper's vigilance to this effortless witnessing? Singer's answer points to a different understanding of spiritual development altogether. The problem is not that you need to watch more carefully or meditate more diligently. The problem is that you need to stop doing and start being willing to go through life's experiences.

Singer uses the image of animals evolving through struggle. Humans, he suggests, evolve in precisely the same way—not through filtering experience, but by moving through it. When something difficult arises—fear, shame, sexual thoughts, thoughts of abandonment, thoughts that others dislike you—the normal response is to resist, to push it away. But that resistance is itself the gatekeeper. The alternative is to be willing. Willing to sit with what arises. Willing to flow with it rather than dam it up. Willing to serve what's in front of you, to work with the evolutionary process rather than against it.

This willingness is the operative word. It is not resignation or passivity in the everyday sense. It is an active choice to stop fighting your own inner nature. When you make this choice repeatedly—when difficulty comes and you choose to stay present rather than mentally reject it, when fear rises and you choose not to rationalize or suppress it—consciousness itself evolves. The thing that was traumatic the hundredth time you move through it is no longer traumatic. The energy that was locked in resistance becomes available. And that freed energy, moving without obstruction, is what the great traditions call liberation.

Singer describes his own young adulthood as exemplary. In high school, he used to walk up to situations that frightened him—social dramas, potential embarrassment—and let himself be in them. He didn't analyze them, didn't strategize about them. He just walked in and let it sweep over him. Afterward, looking back, he was already past it. No trauma lodged. No wound calcified. And gradually, through this repetition, he lived at a place not of peace exactly, but of flow. He was serving life as it came, not filtering it through a gatekeeper's checklist.

The Consciousness That Looks Back

There is something almost radical in Singer's teaching for practitioners trained in the language of witness consciousness, non-attachment, and spiritual objectivity. He is saying: the "observer" you think you should be cultivating is not an achievement of will or effort. It is what remains when you stop all the gatekeeping. The consciousness that truly witnesses—that simply sees and is not defined by what it sees—is not a state to reach. It is what is already here, obscured only by layers of mental doing.

This shifts the entire project of inner work. You are not trying to become the witness. You are recognizing that the one who hears all the gatekeeping chatter—the one who notices thoughts, feelings, judgments arising—that awareness has already been here all along. It is your most fundamental nature. The work is not adding anything. It is the willingness to stop subtracting, to stop filtering, to stop managing.

Singer's teaching on witness consciousness thus becomes a teaching on surrender—but not passive surrender. It is the active choice, moment by moment, to let life move through you rather than through you constantly moving to change, judge, or optimize it. When that choice becomes habitual, when the gatekeeping gradually falls away through repeated willingness to go through experiences, consciousness itself begins to flow like water again, undammed, ecstatic, utterly free.

Where to go from here

The practical implication is deceptively simple but profoundly challenging to live: notice when you are looking at your inner experience—when you are catching thoughts, evaluating emotions, deciding what is spiritual or good—and see if you can rest into simple seeing instead. Not as a technique, not as something to try, but as an invitation. Can you let this moment simply be what it is without your mind's inspection? What would happen if you didn't touch that thought? If you were willing to be in that feeling without managing it?

These are not rhetorical questions. They are the edges where consciousness either remains contracted in gatekeeping or expands into its native freedom. Singer's distinction between seeing and looking is not intellectual. It is a direct pointer to the difference between a life lived in mental control and a life lived in flow. The shift requires only willingness—willingness to let experience be as it is, and to discover what you are in that allowing.

[0:48] Gative of trimesters.

[0:53] There are certain subjects

[0:58] they can only be discussed from inside.

[1:02] The deeper you go inside, the subtler

[1:05] the topics become.

[1:08] So we're going to touch this topic that

[1:10] I think people get often very wrong,

[1:12] which is witness consciousness.

[1:16] People write me and they say, "I'm

[1:18] witnessing. I'm witnessing. I see what's

[1:20] going on in there and I'm really getting

[1:22] uptight. I'm really having trouble. I

[1:24] was doing okay to start with, but now I

[1:27] I'm just feeling more depressed. Just

[1:29] sitting there watching is causing it not

[1:32] to do well. Well, that's not what's

[1:35] causing that to do well. So, let's talk

[1:37] about that. But I want to start with

[1:39] something very subtle.

[1:41] There's a difference between seeing and

[1:45] looking.

[1:47] They sound very similar. I'm looking at

[1:50] you. I'm seeing you. They're not even

[1:52] close.

[1:54] Seeing is passive.

[1:56] It happens by itself.

[1:59] There's no will involved.

[2:02] You just see what what there is to see.

[2:06] You're not judging it. You're not

[2:07] touching it. You're just noticing it.

[2:10] She's over there. He's over there. He's

[2:13] over there. Okay. He's got a bright

[2:15] shirt on. You're just seeing.

[2:18] Looking

[2:20] has intention behind it. Has will behind

[2:23] it. I'm looking for something. Both are

[2:26] using in the eyes,

[2:29] but it's not as clean as just seeing. Do

[2:32] you see the difference? It's deep. I'm

[2:34] talking to you deep tonight. All right.

[2:36] So if you're looking for something, it

[2:40] means there's a willful intent

[2:43] inside

[2:44] that is trying to either see something

[2:47] inside or see something outside. But

[2:50] there is intent involved. There's will

[2:52] involved. Seeing is not anything like

[2:54] that. Seeing is just the Buddhists have

[2:57] a thing called just seeing. You're just

[3:01] seeing. There's nobody doing anything.

[3:03] You don't the camera just sees

[3:07] you look. Okay? And that looking is what

[3:11] makes the difference. If you're looking,

[3:14] there will be tension

[3:17] because you're actually looking for it

[3:18] to be a certain way. You think that when

[3:21] there's consciousness means it's quiet

[3:24] in there. I can see what's going on in

[3:27] there because I'm looking at it. Right?

[3:30] I'll do it another way. Uh if you can

[3:32] get this, it would change your life in

[3:34] terms of how quickly you grow. All

[3:36] right? If you're looking, there's

[3:40] intent. So if you see something coming

[3:44] up and you're looking

[3:48] to see if it's what you want, to see if

[3:49] it's okay, to see if it's pure, to see

[3:52] if it's spiritual, to see what it's

[3:54] going to take you to God, you're

[3:56] judging. You're looking at it. To do

[3:59] that, you have to catch it. May believe

[4:01] it's a thought or a feeling. You catch

[4:04] it and you look at it and you decide, do

[4:09] I let it go? Do I rationalize it or can

[4:13] I push it away to have to deal with it?

[4:16] Everybody with me? It's pretty far back

[4:19] there, but you're all back there. And

[4:21] there's a big distinction between

[4:23] catching it and deciding what to do with

[4:26] it. That is not witness consciousness

[4:29] versus

[4:31] you notice that it comes up and passes

[4:35] through. There's nobody doing anything,

[4:38] you know, trying to make it pass through

[4:40] because what's the it? You have to have

[4:42] caught it. So, there's an it that you're

[4:45] letting pass through. Do you understand

[4:46] that? Otherwise, it's just it's coming.

[4:50] You're noticing and you're not touching

[4:53] it. You're not catching it. You're not

[4:55] rationalizing it. and thinking what to

[4:56] do about it. Is it okay? I hope you

[4:59] understand me. It's a very deep

[5:02] difference between letting it go and

[5:05] what other people think letting it go

[5:07] means I caught it. Can I let it go? How

[5:10] about if you don't catch it? You just

[5:12] let it go. Let it go through as opposed

[5:15] to you catch it and then let it go. I

[5:18] need to know. Can anybody understand the

[5:20] difference or am I just talking to the

[5:23] wind? Are you in there? Do you notice

[5:26] that what you call witness consciousness

[5:29] involves generally with most people till

[5:32] they go very deep it involves doing I'm

[5:36] being the witness. Well then you're not

[5:37] the witness.

[5:39] It's the layer of mind that is looking

[5:42] at the lower layers of mind and people

[5:45] will sometimes write me and it's rare

[5:47] but they'll write me and say now I see

[5:48] it that was mine. And I was calling it

[5:51] witness consciousness. But it was mind

[5:54] looking at what was below that layer of

[5:56] mind. And then that mind is deciding, do

[5:59] I let it go? Do I not let it go? Is this

[6:01] okay? Do I have to be embarrassed? What

[6:03] are other people thinking?

[6:05] None of that is witness consciousness.

[6:08] Witness consciousness is like you see

[6:10] the what's behind me. Go look what's

[6:12] behind me. How hard was that? I want to

[6:14] know how hard you to see what's there.

[6:17] Effortless.

[6:19] There's no will. say, "Okay, I want to

[6:20] look at that." [laughter] You just see

[6:22] it. It comes in and it passes through.

[6:25] That's when there's consciousness.

[6:27] You're noticing

[6:30] that it's coming in and passing through.

[6:32] You're not touching it. You're not

[6:33] judging it. You're not liking it. You're

[6:36] not not liking it. You're not

[6:38] rationalizing it. Oh, I'm okay. I'm

[6:40] higher than before. I had worse thoughts

[6:42] than this. So, I'm doing good. I'm in

[6:44] the witness. No, I mean, it's okay. You

[6:46] can call that witness. It is. It is

[6:48] higher than being lost in what's coming

[6:50] up. But I'm telling you that layer of

[6:53] witness is mine because it's still doing

[6:55] something. It's still actively

[6:58] exercising this will that's catching

[7:01] what's coming up. That's the best thing

[7:02] I can do. Once described it as the

[7:04] gatekeeper.

[7:06] There's a gatekeeper in there, isn't

[7:08] there? Especially if you're spiritual.

[7:11] You all get this spiritual ego

[7:12] gatekeeper. [snorts] All right. is

[7:14] coming up and somebody's checking out.

[7:17] Is this okay? Is this right? Is this

[7:21] clean? Is this where I want to be? Is

[7:22] how I want to be? That's the gatekeeper.

[7:25] Okay, look at me. That's got to go. I

[7:28] mean, if you want to go deep, there is

[7:31] no gatekeeper. The great ones, they've

[7:34] let go to where everything that comes up

[7:37] passes through. And with it is this rush

[7:41] is this ecstasy. It's this flow of

[7:44] energy making it through without

[7:46] touching anything. It's like you're

[7:48] going to undescribed as follows. And you

[7:50] will feel this some and when you get

[7:52] done right. Oh what hast thou done to

[7:55] me? Wave upon wave of endless ecstasy

[7:58] satishly day and night. Throng upon

[8:01] throng. Those are not idle words. It's

[8:05] throng upon throng waving through you.

[8:08] Nobody's touching it. It's just ecstasy

[8:12] and you're merging in it. You're not

[8:13] catching it. Oh, I wish I felt more.

[8:16] It's this. I used to feel there's nobody

[8:18] in here except the experiencer. That's

[8:21] the witness. How do you know you're

[8:23] experiencing ecstasy? How do you know?

[8:25] Because you're experiencing it. Can't do

[8:27] anything about it. Mind stops it. If

[8:30] mind for one moment says, "Oh boy, I

[8:32] used to have that when I first started

[8:34] meditating." Yog was very very strong. I

[8:36] seen the light and I remember the first

[8:40] time this back in 72 that I actually saw

[8:43] light. I did these little things, right?

[8:45] It's bam. The moment it came, it started

[8:48] to open up in there in the third eye,

[8:50] right? The mind said, "Oh, there it is.

[8:52] It goes away."

[8:54] Anybody notice? Okay. Kind of neat. You

[8:58] hear me? I want to talk to how to get

[9:01] past those stages.

[9:03] So, as long as there's a gatekeeper in

[9:05] there, a layer is still mine. Very deep

[9:08] layer, but a very deep layer of active

[9:12] vitis still vibrations in mind. Okay. In

[9:16] a mental plane, well, that's still

[9:18] there. It's going to judge. It's going

[9:22] to judge. Is this okay? Is that wrong?

[9:24] Etc., etc. And if it feels okay with it,

[9:28] it will let it go. If it doesn't feel

[9:30] okay with it, I'm telling you, it's

[9:31] going to push it down. Pushes away. I I

[9:34] don't want this thought. I don't want a

[9:36] sexual thought. I don't I don't want a

[9:37] thought that I might leave somebody. I

[9:38] don't want a thought that somebody not

[9:39] like me. I don't want that thought. No.

[9:41] No. I shouldn't have that thought. What

[9:43] do you do with it? You had it.

[9:45] Obviously, it obviously didn't pass

[9:47] through. Why? You stopped it. You

[9:49] actually stopped it from passing through

[9:51] so you could judge it.

[9:53] That's the gatekeeper. All right? And

[9:56] you know as I what trouble is the fish

[9:58] doesn't know they're in water because

[10:00] they never been out. Many many people,

[10:02] but I hope not you guys can't hear a

[10:04] word I'm talking about because they've

[10:06] never been out. It's just they're in it

[10:08] and they're judging themselves and

[10:10] they're judging their thoughts. That is

[10:12] not witness consciousness. That's an

[10:14] active act of mind

[10:16] judging a lower layer of mind which is

[10:19] fine. Fine. It stimulates you to do

[10:22] better. Watch your food. Watch your

[10:24] eating. Keep your watch on your thoughts

[10:25] carefully. They say that right. Keep

[10:28] watch on your thoughts carefully. That

[10:29] is not the witness keeping watch on the

[10:31] thoughts. That is your mind. How do you

[10:34] know what your thoughts are supposed to

[10:35] be? Somebody told you some book you read

[10:38] some teacher some something. All right.

[10:40] They told you you shouldn't have those

[10:42] thoughts. Those are bad thoughts. That's

[10:44] a really good thought. All right. You

[10:46] have to catch it to judge it. If you

[10:49] don't catch it, it goes right. They

[10:51] asked Ramachrishna. And I said it all

[10:52] the time. Great enlightened master. Does

[10:55] an enlightened being, totally liberated

[10:57] being ever feel anger? And he said,

[11:00] "Yes, but it's like writing on water."

[11:03] What's the difference? Go write on

[11:05] water. Good. Write it. Come on. Write an

[11:07] essay. No one will ever see it. No one

[11:09] will ever read it. Doesn't even say for

[11:11] one bit of a second. It just passes

[11:13] right through. That's witness

[11:14] consciousness. You notice that you

[11:17] notice.

[11:19] That's all. You're not looking for it.

[11:21] You're looking away from it. You're not

[11:24] judging it. You're just in there like a

[11:27] camera noticing what passes before. It

[11:30] passes just It's called just seeing.

[11:32] That's a very Zen thing. Just seeing as

[11:36] a story, a beautiful story out of the

[11:37] Zen tradition. We're being Zen tonight,

[11:40] okay? where there was a a student who

[11:44] stayed in in the monastery and he would

[11:46] go by and have we call it satsang but

[11:49] sashin or whatever the Buddhists call it

[11:51] with the master once a day. So this

[11:54] student was walking by and there's this

[11:57] giant oak tree that's been there growing

[11:59] in the plaza and he walks by and he

[12:02] walks in sits down with the master and

[12:05] the master says

[12:07] what has changed in you child

[12:10] there's all this light around you what

[12:14] what what changed you weren't this way

[12:15] yesterday what happened

[12:18] well I was walking through the plaza

[12:21] and I saw that oak tree. I saw the oak

[12:24] tree

[12:26] and something happened. I don't know.

[12:29] And here I am. And the master said,

[12:31] "You've walked past that oak tree every

[12:33] single day since you've been here. What

[12:35] you talking about?" He said, "But this

[12:38] time I saw just tree. It wasn't an oak

[12:41] tree that my father planted once or a

[12:44] forest of no polluting and the oak tree

[12:46] is going to die or oh, oh my god, look

[12:48] how old it is. It must be one of the

[12:49] oldest oak." Nothing happened. And there

[12:52] was just tree. That was what that's the

[12:54] teaching. It was just tree. [snorts]

[12:58] And that's a very high state I've been

[13:00] talking to you about. It passed through

[13:02] and you're now a different person. When

[13:05] it becomes just life, everything is just

[13:08] what it is. There's nobody in there

[13:10] judging it. There's nobody there

[13:12] stopping it. Nobody catching it.

[13:13] Somebody comes up to you and yells at

[13:15] you. There's just yelling.

[13:17] There's just this kind of thought. It

[13:21] just passes right through. I don't know

[13:22] what else how to describe it to you. But

[13:24] that's was meant by just tree which is

[13:27] very zen. You'll see that it's just

[13:29] being just tree. There's nobody catching

[13:32] it. It's not that it's not there. It's

[13:35] just you're not doing anything about it.

[13:37] It's just passing right through. What

[13:39] happens then? The next moment happens.

[13:43] Nobody held on to the last moment so

[13:45] that you're now not pure enough to

[13:47] experience the next moment because

[13:49] you're still lost in your judgments,

[13:51] your thoughts, your impressions of the

[13:53] old last moment. That's not be here now.

[13:56] There's all be here now stuff. Okay? Can

[13:59] you do that? No, you can't do that yet.

[14:01] Why have a lot of talk about that? Can

[14:03] you do that? Yes. Is that a major stage

[14:07] in your liberation? Yes, it is. Yes, it

[14:10] is. In fact, I sometime I never get to

[14:12] that next stage. Let's talk about that.

[14:14] So now you're there being there, okay,

[14:18] and doing. Okay, fine. Eventually, and

[14:22] we'll discuss how you get there. You're

[14:24] not You're just noticing. You're just

[14:28] seeing what's going on in there.

[14:30] Nobody's catching it. Nobody's letting

[14:32] go. Not letting go. You're just

[14:35] noticing.

[14:36] That isn't even a high state. That is

[14:40] that's way below where the masters go.

[14:42] Why? Because you're still there. You're

[14:45] not doing anything. You're judging it.

[14:48] You're fighting it. You're letting it

[14:50] go. You're not stopping it. There's

[14:52] nobody doing anything. But you are still

[14:54] aware that you are separate.

[14:58] This is me. You're saying it, but this

[15:01] is me noticing what's going on down

[15:03] there. That's a beautiful state. That's

[15:05] witness consciousness. Okay? It's true

[15:07] witness consciousness, right? There are

[15:09] much higher states. What you mean with

[15:12] the master's plan went and I will use

[15:16] their words is you get to that state and

[15:20] you just been noticing for a long time.

[15:23] And guess what that means? You don't

[15:25] need to be there anymore.

[15:27] There's no reason for you to be not

[15:29] doing anything and judging anything or

[15:31] catching anything or letting anything

[15:32] go. There's no more letting go. There's

[15:34] no more doing. There's no more not

[15:35] doing. You're just there. Well, at some

[15:38] point it happens naturally. You can't

[15:40] make it happen. It's not an act of will.

[15:43] It's part of evolution. You just

[15:45] naturally notice. Don't think you just

[15:48] notice that you don't need to be there.

[15:51] You're not doing anything. And because

[15:53] you don't need to be there, it goes back

[15:56] to another level. It starts to expand

[15:58] out. You're your focused consciousness

[16:01] noticing. I'll give it to you. You're

[16:02] noticing what you're looking at. You're

[16:04] noticing a body. You're noticing there's

[16:06] a world out there. You're noticing their

[16:08] thoughts. You're noticing their

[16:09] emotions. Nobody's doing anything about

[16:10] them. They're just coming and going in

[16:12] beautiful free flow. It's beautiful

[16:13] statew consciousness. All right? No

[16:16] stress, no anxiety, no fears, no

[16:18] nothing. You're just experiencing

[16:21] humanness. You're experiencing life.

[16:23] Okay? At some point, because you've been

[16:26] there long enough, you realize you don't

[16:29] think it. It just happens naturally. You

[16:32] don't need to be there. not doing

[16:34] anything. Why do you need your inner

[16:37] consciousness need to be focused on this

[16:40] body, this mind, these emotions? And the

[16:43] answer is it doesn't have to. It just

[16:46] got in the habit of doing that of

[16:48] focusing and it starts to let go at a

[16:51] whole another level than when

[16:52] consciousness. It starts to let go of

[16:55] the consciousness that's looking that's

[16:58] even seeing even seeing what is seeing

[17:02] and it starts to float back it starts to

[17:04] expand out naturally. I always teach in

[17:08] the 60s they always said you want

[17:09] expanded consciousness. No, you want to

[17:12] not contract your consciousness. Your

[17:15] awareness is already completely expanded

[17:18] throughout the entire universe. That's

[17:20] what enlightenment is. When you let go

[17:22] at the level I'm talking about of

[17:25] needing to be there to see what's going

[17:27] on, [laughter] right? And not to mention

[17:29] do something about it. You need to be

[17:30] there because your thoughts are a

[17:32] problem. You're be careful about eating

[17:34] too much. was be there and judge, be

[17:37] there and be the gatekeeper. That

[17:40] doesn't mean that you go out there and

[17:42] throw parties and have sex freedoms and

[17:44] and food, eat whatever you want. And

[17:46] it's not saying that when you no longer

[17:49] have any urges to do that because you

[17:52] haven't blocked anything inside that's

[17:54] hitting your garbage causing you to want

[17:56] to release all these energies. It's not

[17:58] renunciation.

[18:00] Renociation is child play. If you have

[18:03] to renounce, it means there's something

[18:04] you'd rather be doing than renouncing.

[18:06] How do you choose what to renounce? I

[18:08] don't like Brussels sprouts. I'm going

[18:10] to give them up for land. No, that

[18:12] doesn't count. So, if you have needs and

[18:15] you have desires and you have fears,

[18:18] you're going to be doing something. And

[18:20] therefore, you best discipline yourself

[18:22] and and make sure you're not giving in

[18:24] to all that garbage. And I have to

[18:26] figure out what's okay. What's okay to

[18:28] give into what's okay to not? Where's

[18:30] the balance? Oh, everyone ask me those

[18:31] questions. Where's the bounce point when

[18:33] I should do something or shouldn't do

[18:34] someday there will not be a question

[18:36] like that ever in your mind because you

[18:38] notice it doesn't matter it doesn't

[18:40] matter if I go this way then something's

[18:42] going to have go that way something's

[18:44] going to happen and I don't have to

[18:45] decide you have to be fine I just be

[18:48] fine with that moment of decision and

[18:50] fine with the results okay but you're

[18:52] not thinking it out so in any event at

[18:55] some point that urge that you have to

[18:58] control and manipulate because it would

[19:00] go out and cause trouble and squaring

[19:03] up. You don't have that anymore. I'm

[19:06] sorry to tell you there are no needs.

[19:09] There are no fears. You can said you

[19:12] sure told him his guru told him if a

[19:14] lion jumps at you feel fear. But if

[19:17] somebody doesn't say hello or if you

[19:19] think that somebody's judging you that's

[19:20] ridiculous. There's nothing happening.

[19:23] All right. So that that kind of fear

[19:25] psychological fear but there's no

[19:27] desires. Oh, I want to live a life with

[19:29] no desires. Hey, wait. Do you find out?

[19:31] But no desires doesn't mean I'm

[19:33] suppressing my desires. That's an act of

[19:35] will. So it's very hard for you to

[19:37] listen to because but I want you to hear

[19:39] the state. Okay. If you're done. I used

[19:42] to talk about being done. When are you

[19:44] done? When you're done. I'm done eating.

[19:47] How do you know? I don't want anymore.

[19:50] But don't you want more? No, I don't.

[19:52] And there's nothing inside of us asking

[19:54] me to do more. And what about a

[19:56] relationship? Well, sometimes there's

[19:58] good times, sometimes there bad times.

[19:59] the relationship is you okay with that?

[20:01] Of course, I'm okay with that. I don't

[20:02] do anything about it. I could change the

[20:05] person so the way I want them to be. You

[20:07] don't have that anymore.

[20:10] And my experience is the only way that's

[20:12] really goes away is with this great

[20:15] teacher that you have. I heard you had

[20:16] it. It's called life

[20:19] pushes some changes, don't it? Life puts

[20:21] you through some changes. You find that

[20:23] over time you're not the same person and

[20:26] a little freer maybe about certain

[20:27] things and not as grabby and not as

[20:29] needy and not as jealous and not as

[20:32] fearful. How about this? Been there,

[20:34] done that. That's a real teaching, isn't

[20:37] it? It's not somebody told you what to

[20:39] do. You did the best you could and you

[20:42] learned. You grew. You little words

[20:45] grew. The right word is evolve. People

[20:47] talking about the evolution of the soul.

[20:48] That's what we're talking about. that

[20:50] you back there that would be busy doing

[20:52] and grabbing and judging at some point

[20:56] about certain thing not everything about

[20:58] certain things I'm done I don't need

[21:00] that anymore I don't have to think it

[21:02] even there's nothing in me that is

[21:05] trying to hold on to that or push that

[21:07] away I'm comfortable with it then you

[21:09] evolved

[21:11] that's different than learning you

[21:13] literally evolved most of you guys maybe

[21:16] when you were little you played with

[21:18] dolls or with little trucks

[21:20] Okay. And they were the most important

[21:22] thing. You had this really special one,

[21:24] right? Oh, you held on that doll, didn't

[21:26] you? Right. And hold on that truck and

[21:28] the baseball or whatever it was, right?

[21:30] Well, you're not doing that anymore. Did

[21:32] you renounce it? No. I outgrew it. I

[21:35] lick these words. I evolved past that to

[21:39] that is not what it's about. You change.

[21:43] So, you grow through things. Used to be

[21:45] all about money. Maybe you guys at one

[21:48] point I just oh it's all about how much

[21:50] money I have and and you realize it's

[21:52] not. How'd you realize that? But

[21:54] suppressing if you suppress it still is

[21:57] there. Although we wouldn't have to

[21:58] suppress it. The fact is you still have

[22:01] this thinking that it's about money.

[22:03] It's about relationships. It's about

[22:05] sex. It's about these different things.

[22:07] But I'm not supposed to be like that.

[22:09] I'm a spiritual person, spiritual ego,

[22:12] right? So I'm going to suppress those

[22:13] things. Now I'm not about them. You are.

[22:16] So otherwise you wouldn't have to push

[22:17] them away. But how do they come back up?

[22:19] No, don't think like that. Don't be like

[22:21] that. Now, can you hear me? Anybody? All

[22:24] right. But I'm not telling you to not be

[22:25] like that. You have to go through what

[22:27] you need to go through. That's all I can

[22:28] tell you. But there are ways to go

[22:30] through it very quickly. I'm painting a

[22:32] picture for you that when you are done

[22:36] with something, that's a very spiritual

[22:37] state. Not I'm done with you. That's not

[22:41] done. That's you suppressing and trying

[22:43] to stay away from it. But when it

[22:45] doesn't even I tell you like the white

[22:47] lines in the road, you really freak out

[22:49] when they're yellow instead of white,

[22:50] don't you? No, they just notice there's

[22:53] witness consciousness. You notice

[22:55] they're yellow. You notice they're

[22:57] white. You don't do anything about it.

[22:59] That's how it becomes when you're done

[23:00] with something. You have to do anything

[23:02] about it. And we'll talk more about how

[23:05] life takes you to that state and how to

[23:07] work with that. But at this point I'm

[23:09] saying when you're done enough

[23:13] there are no desires. There are basic

[23:16] needs. Food, clothing, shelter. That's

[23:18] not a desire. That's the body's needs.

[23:21] Okay? Better to be some fancy house. Has

[23:23] to be some fancy food that's exactly the

[23:26] way you want it to be. It tastes just

[23:27] what you want, the right amount. That's

[23:29] not food, clothing, and shelter. That's

[23:31] need. I need it to taste this way. I

[23:33] need to be like that. I need a bigger

[23:34] portion, little portion. I need this. I

[23:36] need that. I need that. I need I need I

[23:39] need I need. All right. When you're done

[23:42] with the basics, you don't have needs.

[23:46] You realize that just had me caught

[23:49] trying to compensate for my problems by

[23:52] having these needs and trying to satisfy

[23:54] them. I'm not tell you not to have

[23:56] needs. You know, I did. But you're gonna

[23:58] give gave a talk called desire my great

[24:02] enemy. But that's going to make you

[24:03] suppress it. That make you think I'm

[24:05] also have desires. No, no. You're

[24:08] supposed to not have desires. Not not

[24:10] have desires. See the difference? It's

[24:12] like, I I caught it and I don't like

[24:14] having these desires. I shouldn't have

[24:15] these desires. That's not having

[24:17] desires. That's not wanting to have

[24:19] desires and therefore pushing them away.

[24:22] If you push them away, they're still

[24:23] there and you keep pushing them away.

[24:24] I've talked about it over and over

[24:25] again. But you will get to a point and

[24:28] you will. Meditation helps. Life helps.

[24:31] Life helps. Everything helps. Everything

[24:33] helps if you're open. And we'll talk

[24:35] about that more in a minute. If you work

[24:38] your way through it, but you don't even,

[24:40] it's not even you doing it. It just been

[24:43] there, done that. If you did it, there's

[24:46] not been there, done that. I'm busy

[24:47] doing it. If it just Okay. Okay. Okay.

[24:52] I've had relationships. Some of them

[24:55] work. Some of them don't. I'm not

[24:57] against them. I'm not for them. I'm not

[25:00] waiting for my soulmate to show up. I'm

[25:02] not doing anything. I just don't feel

[25:05] the need I used to have. Does that mean

[25:07] I won't have a relationship? No. That's

[25:09] wonderful, right? But I don't need it.

[25:12] I'm fine without it. I've learned I just

[25:15] learned that I'm fine. I'm fine. Okay.

[25:18] But but you're a social animal. I am

[25:20] not. I'm the self. I am the self. Whole

[25:24] and complete within myself. You

[25:26] understand that the consciousness is

[25:28] whole within itself. But you can't make

[25:30] yourself be that way. It has to be

[25:32] something you learn. Has to be something

[25:34] you grew through. Has to be something

[25:36] you reach that state of evolution. How's

[25:38] that? Animals evolve through their

[25:40] bodies. You evolve through your inner

[25:42] being. You have all these experiences.

[25:44] So what happens if there isn't these

[25:47] needs? Then there's no need for someone

[25:50] to be there handling the needs. There's

[25:52] need to be a gatekeeper. Doesn't need

[25:54] somebody in there who's checking it out

[25:57] because there are no needs. It's fine

[25:59] with it, fine without it. There's no

[26:01] success. There's no failure. There's no

[26:02] like. There's no dislike. Why? How can

[26:05] there be no like or dislike? I don't

[26:06] know. Does it mean somebody say been

[26:08] there, done that? Have you seen enough

[26:10] likes and dislikes as you walk through

[26:12] your life to catch on that there will

[26:14] always be likes and dislikes? You

[26:16] struggle to get the what you want. You

[26:18] struggle to stay away from what you

[26:19] don't want. And you just end up

[26:20] struggling. And at some point, you wake

[26:22] up and say, I don't think so. I think I

[26:25] can handle what's h there. I can handle

[26:28] it. Not I can deal with it. I can handle

[26:31] it. It's fine. It's reality. I I don't

[26:34] have to stop it and judge it and work

[26:36] with it. You talking about you should

[26:37] need to work on yourself. Someday you

[26:39] will never have to work on yourself

[26:41] because there's nothing in there that

[26:42] needs to be worked on anymore. It's not

[26:44] doing the desire and need thing. Okay?

[26:47] It fell away. That's what it does. It

[26:49] falls off when you've been there, done

[26:51] that. You're not making it do that. It

[26:53] just does that because you grew. I don't

[26:55] know what to tell you. You've been

[26:57] through it. You've been so many things.

[26:58] You're not the same person. Somebody not

[27:00] the same person you were yesterday. All

[27:01] right? It's just you keep changing. You

[27:03] keep growing and hopefully you're

[27:05] growing in the right direction which is

[27:07] you let go. When you're in there into

[27:10] the deep states of witness where

[27:12] nobody's touching anything you're just

[27:14] noticing it like Ramachrishna. It

[27:16] doesn't matter if anger comes up fine.

[27:18] It passes through who cares? What harm

[27:20] does anger do if you go nothing?

[27:23] Nothing. Why judge it? Why say I'm not

[27:25] supposed to feel anger? Who said it's

[27:27] language is part of the human stuff,

[27:29] right? But you don't touch it. You

[27:31] didn't do anything about it. I don't

[27:32] have to catch it and release it and

[27:34] figure out how to deal with this anger,

[27:35] right? Come on. You felt anger. You

[27:38] better deal with it. Otherwise, you yell

[27:39] at somebody or hit somebody or cause all

[27:41] kinds of trouble when it just passes

[27:44] right through like the breeze. What do

[27:46] you do about the breeze? Reasonable 10

[27:48] mph breeze. I stop it. I can't handle

[27:51] it. What if you can handle it? Then you

[27:54] don't touch it. You don't need to touch

[27:56] it. You're not not touching it. I don't

[27:58] know how to talk about this, right?

[27:59] You're not not touching it. You're not

[28:01] touching it. There's no reason to touch

[28:03] it. It's just a nice breeze blows

[28:05] through. Anger can be that things can be

[28:07] I'm not telling you they should be, but

[28:08] they they just come and go. There's

[28:11] energy passing through. And if you don't

[28:13] touch it, but if you have the tendency

[28:16] to touch it, you've already touched it.

[28:19] You caught it and I should let this go.

[28:21] Right? It's when you get very high

[28:23] there's no tendency to touch it. Doesn't

[28:25] mean it's not there. It just passes

[28:27] right through. Well, I was talking about

[28:28] the higher states. Once you reach that

[28:31] state, which is true with this

[28:32] consciousness, there's no reason to be

[28:34] there focusing on yourself. There's no

[28:36] reason to be noticing or focusing on the

[28:39] thoughts. They're fine. They just come

[28:41] and go. And what happens? They release

[28:43] their bondage that they have on you. You

[28:46] used to have to watch the thoughts,

[28:47] watch the emotions, watch the world. Now

[28:49] you don't because nothing's happening in

[28:52] there. It's fine. And it naturally lets

[28:54] go. It says you don't do it. It

[28:56] naturally doesn't have to be there. So

[28:58] it's not and it starts to drift up.

[29:00] That's why I was telling you it's not

[29:02] about expanding your consciousness. It's

[29:04] about ceasing to contract your

[29:06] consciousness. You're contracting your

[29:08] conscious by staring at you, by staring

[29:10] at your thoughts and staring at your

[29:11] emotions, staring at your feeling, all

[29:13] that. Right? It it focuses down to this

[29:15] point. As that ceases to bind you, to

[29:18] distract you, it naturally goes back to

[29:22] its source. And the great ones went all

[29:24] the way back. They went all the way

[29:26] back. They talk about that moment of

[29:29] letting go of your sense of

[29:30] individuality. It's not something you

[29:32] do. It's something you let happen. And

[29:34] they talk about how difficult that is.

[29:36] That's what Christ meant by dying to be

[29:37] reborn. You literally let go of this

[29:41] sense of individuality because you're

[29:43] not individual. you're the divine

[29:45] consciousness focusing on your stuff as

[29:48] you I'll go deeper but as you don't need

[29:51] to do that then it doesn't happen and

[29:54] enlightenment is a very natural state in

[29:56] fact I tell you guys you're already

[29:58] fully enlightened that is where you in

[30:01] there you're conscious in there the

[30:03] source of that awareness is the divine

[30:05] oneness you are already there but you're

[30:08] being distracted by what you think you

[30:11] still need to deal with you Right?

[30:14] [laughter] And then the consciousness

[30:15] gets pulled down to this focal point.

[30:18] Okay? So we started with witness

[30:20] consciousness saying that it's not about

[30:22] catching it, looking at it and then

[30:24] letting it go. It's about noticing just

[30:27] noticing it. All right. Nice discussion.

[30:29] And I hope you can feel the inspiration

[30:31] of what a great being you are. I'm

[30:34] telling you, you are with Christ. You

[30:36] are with Buddha. You are with all the

[30:38] great masters. That's where you are

[30:39] right now. Not later, not someday. But

[30:42] you're focusing on this mind and on this

[30:45] stuff. So how do you get there? They

[30:47] give you all kinds of techniques and

[30:49] they're wonderful. I always tell you

[30:51] whatever your teachings are, whatever

[30:52] your techniques, some of them are pretty

[30:55] weird. Whatever helps you to let go of

[30:58] yourself, that's the essence. It's all

[31:01] about letting go of yourself. If you're

[31:03] in there and you catch on that this eye

[31:07] in here that keeps coming up, I want

[31:10] this. I need this. I like this. What if

[31:13] every time the eye showed his face, I

[31:15] relaxed,

[31:17] not controlled it, not suppressed it,

[31:19] not hugged it, right? Just just relax.

[31:24] Then it starts to fall away. And that's

[31:27] my experiences of all my years of 55

[31:30] years, right? The highest technique is

[31:33] letting go of yourself, is dying to be

[31:35] reborn. Mayba said, "Man minus mind

[31:38] equals God." If you're willing to let go

[31:41] of everything that comes up as it comes

[31:43] up, not control it, not judge it, just

[31:47] okay. And you don't even wait till it

[31:49] comes up. There's a point at which it

[31:51] starts to come up. You see it. You see

[31:53] it. You see when you're getting weird.

[31:55] Don't tell me you don't. You see when

[31:57] you get in a mood. You see when you feel

[31:59] angry. You see when you feel jealous.

[32:00] You see when you feel scared. You see

[32:02] this stuff, don't you? And you actually

[32:04] see it right when it starts. But you

[32:06] want to check it out. You want to find

[32:07] out why do I feel fear? What what

[32:10] happened? What did this person do? Why

[32:11] do I feel jealous? What are they doing?

[32:13] You still want to go down there and get

[32:15] all involved in the junk. You think I

[32:17] can work it out? Which is fine. You

[32:19] know, just do the best you can. But it's

[32:21] said and done when you're ready,

[32:24] willing, and able to be an explorer.

[32:27] Your life's [clears throat] here is

[32:28] going to be gone in 80, 90 years. You

[32:30] hear me? Are you willing to explore

[32:32] reality? Check it out. Then every time

[32:35] it starts to come up, you relax. Keep

[32:38] your hands to yourself and let it go to

[32:41] the best it can. Doesn't mean it's going

[32:42] to go every time, but over time it goes.

[32:46] And what happens with it is you start

[32:48] reaching states of been there, done that

[32:51] without having to do the karma, without

[32:53] having to go through all those

[32:55] experiences that we have to some you

[32:57] have to go through. We'll talk about

[32:58] that in a second. But if you can relax

[33:00] through it, you'll start noticing it

[33:02] doesn't bother me anymore. I had a

[33:05] friend who once told me, I'll never

[33:06] forget it was years and years ago. He

[33:08] said, 'I guess I'm really growing. He

[33:10] was out here for many years, I guess I'm

[33:12] really growing. And I said, why? He

[33:13] said, I was at work and something

[33:17] happened at work. I didn't even I

[33:18] noticed and I was driving away and I

[33:20] noticed that would have bothered me. I

[33:24] didn't even notice it. It just it was

[33:26] like anything like the white lines in

[33:27] the road. There you grew. Okay. But one

[33:31] way you grow very quickly is to

[33:34] participate in the process of letting go

[33:36] of yourself as opposed to having to go

[33:39] through all this stuff outside

[33:41] which is fine. I don't ever want you to

[33:43] think that I'm teaching you not to go

[33:45] through what you need to go through. But

[33:46] if you ask me how do I know that I need

[33:48] to go through it? You don't want to talk

[33:50] to me. Now your new book goes into all

[33:51] this stuff, right? Very deep, deep

[33:53] questions, you know, wisdom and

[33:55] tethered. How do I know if I need to go

[33:57] through it? If you're asking me, you

[33:59] probably don't need to go through it. If

[34:01] you find that you're in it and look back

[34:03] later, how do you get here? You probably

[34:05] needed to go through it. See the

[34:06] difference? It's like there's a lot of

[34:09] energy in there. It can sweep you away,

[34:11] can't it? And you go through what you

[34:13] need to go through because it swept you

[34:15] away. Swept away with fear, swept away

[34:16] with love, swept you away with

[34:18] attraction, with whatever it is. Okay?

[34:20] Or it swept you away with

[34:21] self-consciousness. I'm embarrassed. I I

[34:24] don't want to do anything. You don't

[34:25] have a choice. You're writing me saying,

[34:27] "Mickey, what do I do if I notice that

[34:29] I'm embarrassed?" No, you don't notice

[34:32] anything. You're lost in it. That's when

[34:34] you know you need to go through it. You

[34:35] You're going through it. You've been

[34:37] there. There have been situations in

[34:38] your life you didn't decide. It just

[34:41] caught you. It was like a wave of fear,

[34:43] of anger, or jealousy or love, whatever

[34:46] it is just swept you away. You didn't

[34:48] write me and say, "Should I go with

[34:49] that?" Because then you're still there.

[34:52] You're still there thinking there's a

[34:54] choice. Okay. Yes. Anybody listening,

[34:57] have you noticed that it can do that?

[34:58] Can sweep you away and you look back,

[35:00] how do I get here? We can get pretty

[35:02] lost, can't we? Ever get really lost?

[35:06] But that's a growth experience. There's

[35:08] nothing wrong with getting lost. If you

[35:10] do the best that you can every moment to

[35:13] let go of what's coming up and then you

[35:16] find that something sweeps you away and

[35:18] you look back or don't look back, you're

[35:20] still caught up in it. I'm telling you,

[35:22] that's how you grow. Because at the end

[35:24] of that, you say, "Oh, been there, done

[35:28] that." You went through it. I've been

[35:31] through that. I've been through that

[35:32] first attraction and just falling in

[35:35] love, thinking it's going to last

[35:36] forever. Anybody been there? Oh, you and

[35:39] then realizing, well, it didn't. It

[35:43] literally didn't. I loved them with all

[35:44] my heart. When I was getting married, I

[35:46] wasn't thinking about what we're going

[35:47] to do when we get divorced. Somebody

[35:48] once said, it was one of the movies. I

[35:50] remember that they talked about that and

[35:52] they said marriage is not a choice when

[35:54] you have no choice. It just swept you

[35:57] away and you can't think of anything

[35:58] else and you're totally lost in this. Go

[36:01] ahead and get married. [laughter] It's a

[36:02] very good thing as opposed to figuring

[36:04] out legally how old somebody going to be

[36:06] when you're old and how many kids you're

[36:07] going to have, right? That's not exactly

[36:11] being swept away. But if you are swept

[36:13] away and you go with it, it sweeps you

[36:15] away. There's real learning to do, you

[36:18] know, in their thinking. I have stuff to

[36:20] learn. But you know, then the divorce

[36:22] shows up 3, four years later and all

[36:25] this ugliness is going on. I hope you're

[36:27] conscious enough not to get scarred by

[36:30] it, but say thank you. Thank you for the

[36:32] experience and realize, well, I've been

[36:35] there. I've seen that. I've seen how it

[36:37] can be like that and be swept away

[36:39] completely. And then it changes. They

[36:42] change. I change. Everything changes.

[36:45] And it's not like that. There's nothing

[36:47] wrong with that. You go through it and

[36:49] you learn something like learning tennis

[36:51] or learning learning an instrument. You

[36:53] learn. Life's your teacher. But if

[36:55] you're sitting there thinking, I don't

[36:56] have to go through this, but it'll be

[36:58] fun. But I care. I don't care. I'll

[37:00] throw the dice. Well, that's different.

[37:02] Okay. Now, we get some karma. Now, you

[37:05] didn't have to go through that. You

[37:06] chose to go through that. And it usually

[37:08] gets pretty ugly. You understand that?

[37:10] As I don't use the word karma with you

[37:12] guys. I'd rather call it a growth

[37:14] experience. But if you purposely did it

[37:16] and knew it was out of balance, what's

[37:19] going to come back is pretty harsh. See

[37:21] the difference? Okay. So now you're

[37:24] learning as you walk through your life

[37:26] or excuse me, as you're pulled through

[37:28] life, you get to the point where you can

[37:31] feel I grew. That's all I can tell you.

[37:33] I grew. As you get older, you certainly

[37:35] start. Some people I'm just amazed how

[37:37] many older people still have all these

[37:39] desires and cravings and bucket lists

[37:42] and all kinds of stuff as opposed to

[37:45] I've been there done that full life full

[37:48] of it right I I learned my lessons can

[37:51] you learn your lessons and I feel good

[37:53] about it I feel very good about it

[37:56] that's that's what it means to mature as

[37:57] you get older in any event so you'll go

[38:00] through these processes of growing of

[38:03] evolution and you are literally evolving

[38:05] what does that I am evolving inside. So

[38:07] I'm not clinging and holding and

[38:09] grabbing. I'm opening. I'm opening. And

[38:12] that will help you go back further. And

[38:14] witness consciousness becomes a natural

[38:15] state. What happens if I've talked about

[38:18] it. What happens if I screw things up?

[38:22] You can't screw things up. You can do

[38:25] the best that you can with the awareness

[38:28] that you have. And I don't like that you

[38:30] ever look at yourself later and say, "I

[38:32] screwed it up." The only way you screwed

[38:35] it up is if you knew it was full of it.

[38:37] You did it anyways and it caused

[38:39] trouble. You get to look at that. But if

[38:42] you're doing the best you can to see

[38:44] what's going on and make some good

[38:46] decisions and do the best you can with

[38:49] the energy that you're working with and

[38:50] you find out later that you grew enough

[38:53] that you would not have done that again,

[38:55] don't you dare look back and feel guilt.

[38:58] Don't you dare look back and feel shame.

[39:00] You grew. You're not the same person.

[39:02] You should look back at that person that

[39:04] made the mistake and say, "Thank you.

[39:07] Thank you for going through the growth

[39:10] that we had to go through to get where I

[39:12] am now." And what's going to happen as

[39:14] you keep letting go? There's more and

[39:16] more joy. And that's what you mean by to

[39:18] get where I am now. I'm doing much

[39:20] better now. But I had to go through what

[39:22] I had to go through. The divorce taught

[39:24] me a lot. I could see where I was

[39:26] screwing things up. It wasn't really

[39:27] just him or her and so on. And and you

[39:30] just you grew. I don't know what to tell

[39:32] you. You're allowed to grow. You're

[39:34] supposed to grow. Earth is a place of

[39:36] souls are sent to evolve. Okay? That's

[39:39] called a mature spiritual being who's

[39:41] growing, but you don't purposely do it

[39:44] so you can grow. It's just life takes

[39:46] you through what you need to go through

[39:48] and you learn and you grow. So, you go

[39:51] through what you need to go through. And

[39:52] what that means is life will take you on

[39:54] the journey, the long and windy road

[39:56] that you need to go through. You do the

[39:59] best that you can to let go. You still

[40:01] do. You're doing the best you can to let

[40:02] go. Let go of what? You know what? Don't

[40:05] you dare ask me what. Every one of you

[40:07] know exactly what you should be letting

[40:09] go of. All right. What comes up and

[40:11] causes that trouble and could cause more

[40:13] trouble. And you just do the best you

[40:15] can. If everyone does the best that they

[40:17] can, the best you can is always good

[40:19] enough. I'm not giving you permission to

[40:22] do stupid things, but if you do the best

[40:24] that you can, don't you dare judge.

[40:27] Don't you dare look back and judge who

[40:29] you used to be. All right? Why why

[40:32] bother growing? You feel guilt about the

[40:34] growth you went through. Okay? So now

[40:37] look what happens. You're naturally

[40:39] evolving. You're naturally being able to

[40:41] handle things you couldn't handle

[40:43] before. How do you know? Cuz you can

[40:45] handle them. And you just keep growing.

[40:47] If you do this, you will find that

[40:50] you're further back. Why? Because you're

[40:52] not being pulled down by what? desires

[40:55] and fears and anxieties and likes and

[40:57] dislikes and, you know, being pulled

[40:59] down by all that garbage that's

[41:01] distracting your consciousness. Now,

[41:03] it's much cleaner than that. And so, as

[41:05] you let go, you float back. It's just

[41:07] it's called the ascent. That's the

[41:09] ascent. It's not something you do. I

[41:12] told you it's like like having a hot air

[41:14] balloon or a helium balloon and it's

[41:16] tethered to the ground. Keep trying to

[41:17] raise it up. Put more air in it. Put

[41:19] more hot air in it. Put more helium in

[41:21] it. No, it's just going to bounce up and

[41:22] down. It's not going to do anything. Cut

[41:24] the tethers. What's going to happen?

[41:26] Effortlessly it will go up by itself.

[41:29] That's what you're doing when you let go

[41:31] of yourself. So you don't have to try

[41:33] and evolve. Don't try to evolve.

[41:35] Evolution is a natural process. And if

[41:37] you're willing, the master talk about

[41:39] it. The masters do talk about. Are you

[41:41] willing to work with the evolutionary

[41:43] process as opposed to against the

[41:45] evolutionary process? If you're in there

[41:47] realizing I want to evolve where I am

[41:50] today, I won't be tomorrow. That's okay.

[41:53] So, I'll be letting go as best I can,

[41:55] letting go of the tendencies that are

[41:57] holding me down. And you know what they

[41:59] are. And don't you dare tell me you

[42:00] don't know what they are. Just don't

[42:02] want to deal with it. Okay? And if you

[42:04] don't know what they are, then you need

[42:05] to go through it. I love it. Thank you.

[42:08] Anybody see the difference? Otherwise,

[42:10] are you dealing with the stuff that you

[42:12] know is full of it inside of you? No.

[42:15] It's too hard. It hurts. If I can let go

[42:18] of all this stuff I store from the past.

[42:20] Why? It's painful. Good. Don't you get

[42:23] it? You don't want that stuff in there.

[42:25] Those are the anchors that hold you

[42:26] down. So, when you're willing to sit

[42:28] there and say, "Take me through what I

[42:30] need to go through. I'll scream and

[42:32] yell, but just take me through what I

[42:35] need to go through so I can get free and

[42:38] liberated." But you can't do it. You

[42:41] have to let it happen. Is it going to be

[42:43] painful? Sure. You store all this stuff

[42:45] in there and it comes up. It's hard.

[42:47] It's difficult. Have compassion with

[42:49] understanding. do the best you can to

[42:52] relax through it and keep relaxing

[42:53] through it. You're evolving. And until

[42:56] you eventually get to the point where

[42:57] the things that you thought you couldn't

[42:59] handle, you don't even notice,

[43:01] right? They're just, "Okay, fine. Been

[43:04] there, done that. I've been through

[43:06] that. I've seen that. Okay. I have I

[43:09] [clears throat] have this blemish on my

[43:11] face and I have to go to the senior prom

[43:14] in high school. Boy, that's a drama.

[43:17] What am I going to do?" All right. And

[43:18] so he's like, "Fine. It's nothing."

[43:21] Right? You grow up and all of a sudden

[43:24] it doesn't matter. It's not that's not

[43:26] there. It doesn't matter. Right? You

[43:29] just realize the world's not the way you

[43:31] think it is. Not everybody's staring at

[43:33] you judging. You think they are because

[43:35] you're doing it to yourself. They're too

[43:36] busy doing it to themselves. Right? You

[43:39] start to catch on. Doesn't matter what

[43:41] people think. It doesn't matter. That's

[43:43] that's a good one. Does it matter to you

[43:45] what people think? Does it matter if

[43:46] people like you or not? Where do you see

[43:48] that one go away? Can we spend a second

[43:50] with that one? That's a big one. They

[43:53] don't like you or not like you. They

[43:57] either like or don't like the part of

[43:59] themselves that came up in your

[44:01] presence. You don't know whether they

[44:03] like you. They had totally different

[44:05] lives than you. They totally different

[44:07] experiences. The very thing that you

[44:08] think is turning them on e, they're

[44:11] inside turning them off, right? How do

[44:13] you know what somebody else is thinking?

[44:15] you think you know because it's what you

[44:16] would be thinking. It's a major

[44:18] liberation to catch on. Don't ever think

[44:20] about what people think about you. Think

[44:22] about how you're doing inside. Do the

[44:24] best that you can because what you think

[44:26] they think about you. I used to check it

[44:28] out. Oh, I shouldn't tell you this. When

[44:31] I was started growing and I woke up in

[44:33] very early in the 70s, I first had my

[44:35] deep witness experiences. He would be a

[44:38] maniac in there. Mickey couldn't live

[44:40] with him. So, I tried to shut him up all

[44:42] the time. I very very zen, very

[44:44] disciplined. I would literally walk up

[44:46] to total strangers and say, "Were you

[44:49] judging my hair of a hippie wearing long

[44:52] hair?" And first look at me like, "No, I

[44:55] didn't even notice." Okay, chalk one up.

[44:58] Strike one. And I would just keep trying

[45:00] to show him how wrong he was. [laughter]

[45:02] And he was always wrong. How do you

[45:04] think you know what somebody else is

[45:06] thinking when you're psychic? You don't

[45:08] even realize that you're thinking and

[45:10] they're thinking what you're thinking.

[45:14] So you catch on that you don't have to

[45:17] do this and then you let go. It's a

[45:19] natural thing. It's not a forceful

[45:21] thing. Now you can be the witness. Now

[45:23] you're not looking what people think

[45:25] about you. Not looking who's staring at

[45:27] you. Not looking. It looks like somebody

[45:29] doesn't whatever. You're not not

[45:30] looking. You're just seeing. Going back

[45:32] to where I started. You're just in

[45:34] there. You're free. You get to how would

[45:36] I like to be free? How would I be free

[45:38] of all that stuff? Make a point of

[45:40] leaning away. Leaning away from

[45:43] yourself. Not pushing away. That's the

[45:45] highest thing I ever teach you. You're

[45:47] not pushing your lower self away. You're

[45:50] just leaning away from it so that it has

[45:52] freed to pass through. Just go on try

[45:55] sometime. Just lean away from ego. Don't

[45:58] push it away. Don't not like it. Just

[46:00] notice you got an ego. Got something in

[46:03] there. Care what people think about you

[46:04] and what you look like and listen to

[46:06] what you said three days ago. All right.

[46:09] You want that to pass? Let it pass.

[46:12] Don't push it back down. Don't suppress

[46:14] it. Don't not like it. Just realize,

[46:17] okay, there's ego being ego. There's a

[46:18] snake being a snake, a butterfly being a

[46:20] butterfly. There's ego being ego. I told

[46:23] you you got to be okay with it. Can you

[46:25] handle your ego, not be your ego and not

[46:28] not be your ego? You got one. Everyone's

[46:31] got one. Who's willing to lean away from

[46:34] it? Not touch it. Just lean away from

[46:36] it. Here it comes doing its thing. You

[46:38] keep leaning away. Eventually, you

[46:40] realize, I can handle [clears throat]

[46:42] that. I don't have to do anything about

[46:43] it. The more of life that you can

[46:45] handle, the less you have to be there to

[46:48] do something. That's called liberation.

[46:51] You become free. Doesn't mean you're not

[46:53] working. It doesn't mean have a

[46:54] relationship. Doesn't mean anything. It

[46:56] means you're not busy doing something.

[46:58] You're just flowing with life. You're

[47:00] being with life. You're serving.

[47:02] Eventually, instead of serving yourself,

[47:04] you serve life. just didn't think about

[47:06] it. You don't think you're serving life.

[47:07] It's just because you don't need

[47:08] anything. You just take care of what's

[47:10] in front of you. Just give. Just keep

[47:13] giving. And the reward of that is where

[47:15] we started is you're not in there

[47:19] staring. You're not in there looking.

[47:20] You're just seeing. And because you're

[47:22] just seeing, you notice fine, I just

[47:26] see. I don't do anything about it. You

[47:28] don't do anything about it. You don't

[47:29] have to be there to watch it. And this

[47:31] natural evolution of floating up, it

[47:35] just keeps floating up and becoming

[47:36] higher and higher. And when it floats up

[47:38] enough, I'm telling you, the shi

[47:42] begins to really flow. And that's what

[47:44] the master talked about. A throng upon

[47:45] throng of ecstasy saturates me day and

[47:48] night. That's where you live. You want

[47:50] to feel love, just wave your hand across

[47:52] your chakras. All this energy comes

[47:54] flying out for as long as you want,

[47:56] whatever you want. And now come out and

[47:58] you don't have to do anything because

[47:59] you already have everything you ever

[48:01] wanted. Period. And so you you can

[48:03] become the servant of others and help

[48:05] others. I hope

[48:08] this deep talk. I knew someday it was

[48:10] going to come out. I tried to not ever

[48:12] talk about it. Do you understand?

[48:15] You're in there. What are you doing in

[48:18] there? I hope that if there's an answer,

[48:21] it is letting go. That's what I'm doing

[48:24] in here. I'm letting go of me. I'm dying

[48:27] to be reborn. Manus mind equals God. I'm

[48:32] letting go of it. I'm not fighting it.

[48:34] I'm not suppressing it. I'm not staring

[48:35] at it. I'm not judging it. Doesn't mean

[48:38] it's not there. It just passes through

[48:40] if you let it. All right.

True witness consciousness is completely passive—you simply notice experiences passing through without catching them or judging them. Observing thoughts usually involves a layer of mind watching other layers and deciding whether thoughts are acceptable, which Singer calls the "gatekeeper" function. One is effortless seeing; the other is active mental doing.
When you actively observe and judge your thoughts, you're using the gatekeeper—a layer of mind that creates tension through intention and control. True witness consciousness requires no effort; the tension you feel is proof you're looking rather than seeing. The solution is to release the gatekeeping, not intensify the watching.
You can't stop it through more effort—that's still gatekeeping. Instead, Singer suggests becoming willing to let all experiences pass through without managing them. When you repeatedly choose to not touch, not judge, and not rationalize what arises, the gatekeeping function gradually releases on its own. It's about unwillingness to do rather than trying to do something better.
According to Singer, when true witness consciousness is present, energy flows through without obstruction, creating an experience of ecstasy—described as "wave upon wave, throng upon throng" of aliveness. There's no effort, no analyzing, just the pure presence that registers what is without being changed by it.
Singer suggests that spiritual evolution happens the way animals evolve—through moving through struggle. Humans grow by being willing to go through life's experiences rather than resisting them. When you stop fighting what arises and instead let it move through you, the energy that was locked in resistance becomes available for growth.
No. Singer's surrender is an active choice to serve what's in front of you rather than defend against it. It's willingness to flow with life while still engaged and present. The difference is that you're no longer spending energy resisting or gatekeeping your own experience—that freed energy becomes available for authentic engagement.
