Hindi Hip Hop

A hip hop subgenre emerging from India that blends rap delivery with Hindi and regional Indian languages, addressing urban street life, socio-political issues, and cultural identity.

What is Hindi Hip Hop?

Hindi Hip Hop (also known as Desi Hip Hop or DHH) is a musical genre that combines the rhythmic and lyrical structures of hip hop with Hindi, Hindustani, and other South Asian languages. Unlike Western hip hop performed primarily in English, Hindi Hip Hop centers vernacular storytelling, using regional dialects, slang, and code-switching to address the lived experiences of India’s urban and marginalized communities. The genre encompasses multiple sonic approaches—from commercially oriented Punjabi-inflected rap to raw “gully rap” (street rap) that documents life in Mumbai’s slums—and spans themes from party anthems to conscious commentary on caste, corruption, police brutality, and poverty.

Origins & Lineage

Hindi Hip Hop’s roots trace to the mid-1980s, when American breakdancing films like Wild Style (1982) and Beat Street (1984) sparked interest in hip hop culture across Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore. By the late 1980s, Kolkata had become a center for hip hop dance workshops while Mumbai and Delhi prioritized rap.

The first commercial Hindi rap arrived in 1990 when Harjeet Singh “Baba” Sehgal released his debut album Dilruba. His 1992 album Thanda Thanda Pani—which sampled Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby”—sold 100,000 copies in three and a half months, making Sehgal India’s first mainstream rapper. Though often dismissed as novelty music, Sehgal established Hindi as a viable language for rap and became the first Indian artist to air a music video on MTV Asia.

The genre evolved slowly through the 1990s, influenced by the Asian Underground movement in the UK—where British South Asian artists like Apache Indian and Panjabi MC blended bhangra, jungle, and hip hop. In 2002, Pakistani-American rapper Bohemia released Vich Pardesan De, pioneering Punjabi rap with street narratives about migration and identity. Bohemia’s work is widely credited as foundational to the Desi Hip Hop aesthetic.

The modern Hindi Hip Hop movement crystallized in the 2010s. Mumbai rappers Divine (Vivian Fernandes) and Naezy (Naved Shaikh) broke through in 2015 with “Mere Gully Mein,” a track produced by Delhi’s Sez On The Beat that portrayed life in Mumbai’s shantytowns. The song went viral, attracting major-label attention (Sony signed Divine) and inspiring Zoya Akhtar’s 2019 Bollywood film Gully Boy, which brought the movement to mass audiences. American rapper Nas served as executive producer and collaborated on the film’s track “NY Se Mumbai.”

By the late 2010s, artists like Raftaar, Badshah, KR$NA, Emiway Bantai, and Yo Yo Honey Singh had achieved mainstream commercial success, often through Bollywood film soundtracks. Underground labels like Azadi Records (founded 2017, home to Prabh Deep and Seedhe Maut) and Divine’s Gully Gang Entertainment (2019) began consolidating the scene. MTV’s reality show MTV Hustle (2019) and Spotify’s Rap 91 playlist further amplified the genre.

How It’s Practiced

Hindi Hip Hop encompasses multiple substyles. Gully rap—named after “gully,” Hindi for street or alley—emerged from Mumbai’s Dharavi slums and prioritizes raw, unpolished storytelling about street life, survival, and social injustice. Commercial Punjabi rap, popularized by Yo Yo Honey Singh and Badshah, blends auto-tuned vocals, dancehall rhythms, and party-oriented themes. Conscious rap, practiced by artists like Vedan, Seedhe Maut, and Prabh Deep, addresses caste oppression, police brutality, women’s rights, and political corruption.

Production varies widely: boom-bap beats, trap sonics, Bollywood samples, and live instrumentation from tabla to synthesizers. Many artists rap in multiple languages within a single track—Hindi, English, Punjabi, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Haryanvi—reflecting India’s linguistic diversity. Flows range from melodic sing-rap to rapid-fire technical wordplay, often incorporating region-specific cadences.

Collective culture is central. Mumbai crews like SlumGods (founded 2009), Mumbai’s Finest, and Swadesi organize cyphers, workshops, and battles. Delhi’s SpitDope and 6FU communities host battle rap events. Rappers frequently form crews or sign to independent labels, with collaborative tracks and diss battles shaping the scene’s competitive ethos.

Hindi Hip Hop Today

Hindi Hip Hop has transitioned from underground subculture to cultural force. Streaming platforms—YouTube, Spotify, JioSaavn—allow independent artists to bypass traditional gatekeepers. Major labels (Universal Music India’s Mass Appeal India, Sony Music) now actively sign hip hop talent. Festivals like Gully Fest (organized by Divine), Rolling Loud Mumbai (2025), and Nas’s Mass Appeal charity concert (April 2025) have brought American hip hop stars to India.

The genre is linguistically and regionally decentralized: Kerala’s Malayalam rap scene (MC Couper, Vedan), Tamil Nadu’s Tamil hip hop (Brodha V, Paal Dabba), Bihar’s Bhojpuri rap (RaajMusic), and Delhi’s Haryanvi-Hindi fusion (Pardhaan) each maintain distinct identities. Female rappers like Dee MC, MC LIT, and Kinari are expanding representation, with Kinari’s LGBTQ+ themes challenging social norms.

Live performance culture has grown: Divine headlined Lollapalooza India and supported 50 Cent’s Mumbai show in 2023. Rap battles and diss tracks—most notably the 2019–2022 feud between Emiway Bantai and KR$NA—generate millions of views and intense fan engagement.

Common Misconceptions

Hindi Hip Hop is not synonymous with Bollywood rap. While commercial artists like Badshah and Raftaar contribute to film soundtracks, the genre’s core identity is rooted in independent, non-film music that centers street narratives and social critique. It is also not a monolith: the party-oriented commercial sound of Yo Yo Honey Singh differs fundamentally from the socially conscious gully rap of Divine or the lyrical battle rap of KR$NA.

The movement is not exclusively Hindi-language; it encompasses Punjabi, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, and other regional languages. The term “Desi Hip Hop” (desi = South Asian) is often more accurate.

Finally, Hindi Hip Hop is not uniformly “spiritual” or “conscious.” While some artists address philosophical and social themes, others focus on flexing, romance, or commercial appeal. The genre’s diversity resists simplistic categorization.

How to Begin

Start with the foundational track: “Mere Gully Mein” by Divine and Naezy (2015), which encapsulates gully rap’s raw energy and street poetry. Watch the 2019 film Gully Boy for cultural context, then explore Spotify’s Rap 91 playlist, which curates emerging and established artists across India’s linguistic regions.

For conscious rap, listen to Seedhe Maut’s Bayaan (debut album) or Prabh Deep’s work. For commercial Punjabi rap, explore Badshah or Yo Yo Honey Singh. For technical lyricism, seek out KR$NA or Raftaar. The documentary Gully Life: The Story of Divine offers a first-person account of the movement’s rise. Follow labels like Azadi Records and Gully Gang Entertainment to track new releases.
