The Best Entry Point: Poem Store

Start with Poem Store, not a book. It is the project that defines Jacqueline Suskin's public identity, and it explains everything else she does. The premise is simple: a patron names a topic, and she writes a unique, improvised poem on the spot in exchange. She has composed over forty thousand of them since 2009. Coverage in the New York Times, T Magazine, the Los Angeles Times and The Atlantic mostly centers on this project, so those pieces are a good way in.

Before reading anything, spend twenty minutes on the Poem Store idea itself: look at a few examples, notice how specific and unforced they are, and then pick a topic of your own, something small and true, and imagine what a stranger could say about it in three minutes. That exercise is the work in miniature.

The Next Three Places to Go

Every Day is a Poem. This is the most direct bridge from Poem Store to your own life. It treats poetry as a daily habit rather than a special occasion, and it is the book to read if the improvised poems made you want to try writing.

A Year in Practice. Read this second if you want structure. As the title suggests, it is built around sustained practice over time, and it pairs naturally with her work as a meditation teacher and educator.

Help in the Dark Season. Go here when you want her at her most emotionally exposed. This collection treats love as a path that begins in the dark, grows, breaks and transforms us, and it holds that human connection is always worth the risk. It is the most personal entry in this list.

Beyond these, The Verse for Now is worth seeking out, and she has nine books in total across Publication Studio, Ten Speed Press, Rare Bird, Write Bloody, Sounds True and Flower Press.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect plainspoken, attentive, warm writing. The poems tend to be rooted in observation, especially of the natural world, and they favor clarity over difficulty. Because so much of her work is improvised, you will notice a quality of presence: lines that feel found rather than polished into ornament.

Expect also that the work is practical. Suskin is a teacher at heart, and her books invite you to do something, not only to admire something. Her workshops, retreats and the Poem Forest curriculum, which brings nature poetry into urban classrooms in Detroit, all come from the same impulse: poetry as a shared, usable skill.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Mistaking improvisation for casualness. Writing a poem on demand, forty thousand times, is a discipline. The speed is the result of long practice, not an absence of craft.

Treating Poem Store as a gimmick. It can look like a novelty, a typewriter and a sidewalk. In practice it is a sustained exchange between a writer and thousands of strangers, and it is the foundation of her whole approach to attention and service.

Expecting purely light, nature-themed verse. The nature poetry is real, but Help in the Dark Season shows she works comfortably with grief, risk and heartbreak.

Reading everything as self-help. The meditation and teaching context is genuine, but the poems stand as poems first.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land hardest during transitions and quiet stretches: a move to a new city, the end of a relationship, a season of grief, a creative drought, or the early weeks of trying to build a daily practice. It also suits teachers, parents and anyone who works with young people, given the Poem Forest curriculum. If your attention has felt scattered and you want a gentle way to return to noticing, this is the moment.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1. Explore Poem Store and the press coverage. Then choose one topic from your own day and write four lines about it, without editing.

Day 2. Begin Every Day is a Poem. Read a short section and write one small poem in response.

Day 3. Take your notebook outside for fifteen minutes. Write only what you can see, hear or touch, then shape it into a poem.

Day 4. Continue Every Day is a Poem. Write a poem for someone else: choose a friend's name or topic and give it to them, Poem Store style.

Day 5. Open A Year in Practice. Read its opening and decide what a sustainable daily routine looks like for you. Write it down.

Day 6. Read selections from Help in the Dark Season. Sit with one poem for a while before moving on, then write about something difficult, briefly and honestly.

Day 7. Reread your six poems. Pick one to revise lightly and share with a person. Then decide whether to continue with A Year in Practice or go on to The Verse for Now.
