Lori McKenna Album Release: Stories in Song and Craft

The Rememberers
The Rememberers

In a July 2020 livestream from Club Passim in Cambridge, singer-songwriter Lori McKenna performs her newly released album, sharing songs rooted in character development, family history, and the everyday details of small-town life. She discusses her songwriting process, the importance of specificity in storytelling, and how personal experience—particularly family relationships and grief—inform songs that use vivid imagery and emotional precision to capture universal human experience.

Read · 7 sections

What does it mean to write a character song?

McKenna describes her approach to character-driven songwriting while introducing "The Balladeer," a song that emerged from the word itself rather than a predetermined story. She explains that character songs are "so fun to write because you can sort of find yourself in them and then they go off on their own." The creative process, she notes, often unfolds through the constraints of rhyme scheme—the need to complete a rhyming line can push the narrative in unexpected directions, revealing details about the character that the writer didn't consciously plan. In "The Balladeer," McKenna traces a fictional female singer's arc from performing in "the darkest bars" to being discovered by the music industry, only to watch that same artist retreat when commercial success threatens to erase her authenticity. The song captures the tension between artistic integrity and the pressure to conform to market expectations.

This approach—writing through character rather than autobiography—allows McKenna to explore universal themes without relying solely on personal memoir. Yet the character remains grounded in specificity: the details matter. "The Balladeer" isn't abstract; it places the protagonist in concrete locations (bars, studios, the road) and shows rather than tells her emotional journey through action and consequence.

How does personal loss shape songwriting?

McKenna performs "She Looks More Like a Mother," a song dedicated to her older sister Marie, who is present in the small audience at Club Passim. The song uses a deceptively simple structure to explore sibling relationships and shared family trauma. McKenna describes losing her parents—her father when she and her sister were thirteen, her mother years before—and the song traces how her sister became a maternal figure despite being close in age. The lyrics move through concrete details: "We had a picture on the wall of a baby angel and a golden crown / when the world came tumbling down." The song doesn't narrate grief abstractly; it shows how survival shapes kinship. "We both got the same size shoes / no one's ever walked in mine but me," McKenna sings, articulating the isolation that coexists with familial closeness.

The performance of this song in front of her sister at Club Passim underscores McKenna's broader practice: the songs are tethered to real people and real events, even when the writing process involves craft and revision. The presence of the subject in the room makes the performance itself a kind of documentation—a public acknowledgment of private bonds.

What role does place play in these songs?

Throughout the performance, McKenna circles back to specific locations: kitchens, back porches, high school bleachers, hometown streets. She half-jokes about establishing a "drinking game" where listeners take a drink every time she mentions certain words—"kitchen," "overtime," "town," "back porch," "street sign," "bleachers," "high school." The joke exposes a real pattern: McKenna's songs are rooted in the geography and infrastructure of working-class American life. These aren't metaphorical spaces; they're where her characters and real family members navigate loss, aging, relationships, and aspiration.

A song like "Marciarelli" (performed with Mark Irwin filling in for the recording's female vocalists) locates its narrative in an actual place—the song references "the freeway down to the sugar cane," grounding abstract emotional conflict in material landscape. Place isn't decoration in McKenna's songwriting; it's a container for meaning, a way to make emotional experience tangible and recognizable.

How does McKenna balance specificity with universality?

The album and performance demonstrate a careful calibration: songs rooted in McKenna's own family history ("She Looks More Like a Mother," "In My Dreams") coexist with character studies and observed stories ("The Balladeer," the songs about the background singer). The specificity—the names, the details, the family members present in the room—doesn't limit the songs' reach. Instead, it deepens it. A listener who has never lost a parent, never had an older sibling step into a parental role, still recognizes the emotional architecture of "She Looks More Like a Mother" because McKenna's precision invites recognition rather than demanding shared biography.

McKenna notes that she sometimes hears songs on the radio that feel generic, stripped of the details that would make them memorable. Her own practice moves in the opposite direction: toward accumulation of specific, sometimes humble details—a picture of a baby angel, the size of shoes, a father's hands marking out something in space. These details are what make the universal human experiences of love, loss, and longing feel real.

What is the role of the supporting band and collaborators?

Throughout the performance, McKenna credits her collaborators. Mark Irwin fills in on parts that were recorded by Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapp. The performance is small—a "tiny little audience of family and dear friends" in the room at Club Passim, with viewers joining online. McKenna is explicit about gratitude for the band, the in-person audience, and the online listeners. This acknowledgment of collaboration underscores an important dimension of songwriting that often gets overlooked: songs are not only personal documents but also communal creations. The voices, instruments, and interpretive choices of collaborators shape how a song is heard and understood.

Why does Club Passim matter in this context?

The venue itself carries weight. Club Passim, located in Harvard Square in Cambridge, has been operating for over sixty years and has been a nonprofit organization for twenty-five of those years. McKenna notes that she has performed there for approximately twenty-three years—most of her adult career as a touring musician has been shaped by this space and community. The livestream performance (filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020) represents Club Passim's effort to sustain its mission during closure: supporting artists, creating community, and enabling music to circulate even when physical gathering wasn't possible.

The nonprofit context matters because it suggests that Club Passim, like McKenna's songwriting, prioritizes meaning-making and cultural continuity over pure commercial logic. The suggested $40 donation goes toward artist relief grants and the venue's operating costs. The frame acknowledges that music and community require sustained financial support, and that listeners/viewers have a role in sustaining them.

Where to go from here

Listeners drawn to this performance might explore McKenna's broader discography to trace how her songwriting has evolved. The emphasis on character and specificity, the deep engagement with family narrative, and the attention to place are consistent across her work. For writers and musicians interested in craft, McKenna models a particular approach: start with a word or image that arrests you, follow it through constraint (rhyme, form, emotional truth), and let the character or story unfold rather than imposing a predetermined narrative. Her openness about her creative process—the jokes about drinking games, the explanations of how songs came to be—makes this performance valuable as both artistic document and masterclass in songwriting. For listeners seeking songs rooted in specificity and emotional precision, McKenna's work offers an alternative to the often-generic landscape of contemporary music.

[6:05] audience of family and dear friends here

[6:08] and we're so thankful for all you guys

[6:09] watching online

[6:11] on your phones on your televisions that

[6:13] you've figured out how to

[6:14] get from your computer to your

[6:16] television i'm not sure how that works

[6:18] smart tv all those smart tv people

[6:20] you're amazing

[6:23] and we're gonna sing you the record the

[6:24] balladeer this is a song uh the

[6:26] balladeer that i started

[6:28] mostly because i just like the word the

[6:31] balladeer and i saw it

[6:32] somewhere one night

[6:35] um and it just hit me and i thought oh

[6:38] that's what i do i

[6:39] i sing slow songs all the time

[6:42] and um i should try to write a song

[6:44] called the balladeer and so when i sat

[6:45] down to write it

[6:47] right away this sort of character popped

[6:49] up and

[6:50] character songs are so fun to write

[6:52] because you can sort of

[6:54] find yourself in them and then they go

[6:56] off on their own and you

[6:57] sort of um because of rhyming you have

[6:59] to sort of you know

[7:00] their story will come out in a rhyme

[7:02] sometimes for you and

[7:04] i was lucky enough that this one did and

[7:05] here's the belladier

[7:17] about the weights in the wings

[7:22] tugging on her just to an inner strings

[7:27] all the whiskey faded cigarette bone

[7:30] dreams she brings herself

[7:33] to her own knees with every line so

[7:36] delicate she

[7:37] sings every song that she knows

[7:42] the way that she hears them sad and slow

[7:47] they're never gonna play her on the

[7:50] radio

[7:52] so she hangs in the darkest bars with

[7:55] downshot and bleeding

[7:58] [Music]

[8:02] said he needed her to help him find

[8:05] the worst the father dear never

[8:09] loved anybody more

[8:15] [Music]

[8:29] [Music]

[8:35] where she could wash the trouble from

[8:38] her heart and let it

[8:41] [Music]

[8:52] and she sang for the first time with her

[8:55] head held high and so much bright it

[8:58] opened up

[8:59] new notes in her throat

[9:02] and there was joy in every new song

[9:05] she wrote the

[9:09] [Music]

[9:15] and business people called say that she

[9:17] was finally headed for the stars

[9:22] at least the top of the charts

[9:27] they changed their clothes and bought

[9:29] fancy cars

[9:31] too star man got the eye of a pretty

[9:35] background singer

[9:38] [Music]

[9:49] with

[9:51] [Music]

[10:00] [Applause]

[10:04] [Music]

[10:17] cause he done her own

[10:21] the background singer took the next

[10:23] flight home

[10:25] and the valeria wrote herself a song

[10:30] about broken lot of dreamers who are

[10:33] searching for

[10:34] something they'll never find

[10:53] [Music]

[11:00] [Applause]

[11:11] thank you thank you thank you

[11:26] [Music]

[11:32] well i'm not going to talk about this

[11:33] one

[11:36] i'm not going to talk about it because i

[11:37] have to sing it so we're just going to

[11:39] sing it that's what we're going to do

[11:46] [Music]

[11:58] she shed a room till i was six

[12:01] i'd look across my pillow

[12:04] ask her if she was sleeping

[12:08] try to keep her from her sleep we had a

[12:11] picture on the wall

[12:13] of a baby angel and a golden crown

[12:17] when the world came tumbling down

[12:25] god knows we can't be more different

[12:28] the two of us cut from the same claw

[12:32] one hand must be velvets off the other

[12:37] denim

[12:38] we were sunday morning church beside

[12:42] seats at the dinner table four older

[12:45] brothers raising a little bit of help

[12:53] she looks more like a mother

[12:57] she's prettier and softer and she

[13:00] always helps me find my way i've been

[13:05] lost knows bigger

[13:07] words than i do but we both got the

[13:11] same size shoes no one's ever walked in

[13:15] mine but

[13:32] we turned 13 two weeks after

[13:35] daddy sat us down and said your mama's

[13:37] dead

[13:38] and it took me years to realize she

[13:41] wasn't out getting groceries

[13:44] i was waiting on a resurrection

[13:48] saved by my disposition my grandfather

[13:52] crying in the kitchen

[13:54] couldn't be the side of me

[13:56] [Music]

[13:59] she looks more like

[14:03] she's prettier and softer and she

[14:06] always helps me find my way up

[14:09] and lost

[14:16] we both got the same size

[14:31] [Music]

[14:38] our big brothers are gods and

[14:42] we grew up and marry good man

[15:56] but i it's not too late i mean we still

[15:59] could i think i missed a couple of them

[16:00] already but

[16:02] we were going to do a drinking game

[16:04] took a drink

[16:06] or back porch or

[16:09] what were my other words kitchen

[16:18] street sign yeah bleachers high school

[16:22] you'll be hammered by the end is what

[16:23] would happen but

[16:31] we'll count somebody start cranking now

[16:33] we'll see how we do we see how we

[16:36] [Music]

[16:39] i had a dream last night

[16:43] that the two of you met you were sitting

[16:47] side

[16:47] by side talking like

[16:51] old friends he looked just like i

[16:55] remember wearing that cold from 85

[17:00] you were smiling like you are right now

[17:03] all free for a while

[17:06] i had a dream last night that the two of

[17:09] you

[17:10] met

[17:13] he was telling you a story

[17:17] i'm not sure which one it was

[17:20] using his hands to mark out something

[17:23] maybe the size of his love

[17:27] he never really spelled that out

[17:30] when he was down here on the ground

[17:34] but it's all right there in between the

[17:37] words and i can hear

[17:38] it clearly now i had a dream

[17:41] last night that the two of you met

[17:47] [Music]

[17:51] [Applause]

[17:55] [Music]

[17:59] in his time but he's somewhere in your

[18:03] eyes

[18:04] between heaven and earth

[18:16] [Music]

[18:25] and whatever you two

[18:27] [Music]

[18:38] and if you mention life is short well

[18:43] that's because he knows

[18:58] [Music]

[19:08] eyes

[19:09] between heaven and earth

[19:28] [Music]

[19:37] oh

[19:39] [Music]

[19:56] i had a dream last night

[19:59] that the two of you met you were sitting

[20:03] side

[20:04] by side talking like

[20:08] old friends

[20:23] [Music]

[21:10] macarelli everybody

[21:23] oh boy um

[21:27] i had to put my pick down i'm trying to

[21:29] play this without a pick which

[21:31] is super stressful for me because i like

[21:33] my pick it's like my security blanket

[21:35] but i'm gonna try and when i'm writing

[21:37] mostly when i'm writing at home

[21:39] almost always i i don't use a pick

[21:42] and um but i don't have i i just

[21:45] i have a stage issue when the stage is

[21:48] involved i need a pic

[21:50] but i'm going to be brave and and try it

[21:56] will ask the audience how are you doing

[22:04] i'm glad that we are good thank you for

[22:08] um i guess you could leave a comment and

[22:10] tell me how you're doing but i can't see

[22:11] the comments is there comments

[22:13] people can leave comments right okay so

[22:16] if you want to tell the rest of the

[22:18] people that can read the comments how

[22:19] you're feeling right now and how you're

[22:20] doing

[22:21] go for it

[22:27] um i wrote this song last summer

[22:30] um for a friend that was going through

[22:34] um a heart a little bit of a heart

[22:36] journey

[22:37] and um

[22:41] she um is very strong very strong person

[22:45] and um and i could tell that she didn't

[22:47] want to burden

[22:48] her friends with what was going on and

[22:51] she has since

[22:52] gotten through said journey and

[22:54] everything is great

[22:56] um but in the in the moment when where

[22:59] she was having these

[23:00] issues um sort of all these things out

[23:02] of her control

[23:03] um i kept sort of chasing her like

[23:06] calling her

[23:06] and chasing her and i'm telling her you

[23:08] can you know we should talk you should

[23:10] you're okay like you know

[23:11] if you want to talk if you just want to

[23:12] talk to me i'm here so i wrote this song

[23:15] and i didn't play it for her for the

[23:16] longest time but um i played it for once

[23:19] or twice

[23:20] since then um and it is a song about a

[23:23] friend just reaching out to another

[23:24] friend and saying

[23:25] i know i can't solve your problem but

[23:26] i'm here if you want to just talk to

[23:28] somebody about it

[23:28] and it's a song called uphill

[23:35] ready

[23:37] [Music]

[23:48] when the road under your feet

[23:51] is dark and feels wrong and you find

[23:55] yourself lost in all your confidence is

[23:59] gone

[24:00] and the stars

[24:05] [Music]

[24:16] sends your knees into the dirt and all

[24:19] your loyal distractions only magnify

[24:24] the hurt when lonesome doesn't quite

[24:28] describe how so alone you feel

[24:33] [Music]

[24:39] hard times and landslides about alive i

[24:43] know

[24:44] like they say none of us get out alive

[24:51] whatever ocean you're swimming across

[24:54] however valley low

[24:58] whatever mountains you climb

[25:02] [Music]

[25:09] i'll walk with you even if it's uphill

[25:16] blessed are the times filled with sun

[25:20] surrounded by your friends

[25:23] those days when all the new roads wait

[25:26] right where

[25:27] the old roads end but should you wake up

[25:31] to every stride outside your windowsill

[25:35] i'll walk with you even if it's uphill

[25:43] hard times and landslides about life

[25:47] god knows we all got some mountains

[25:52] to climb

[25:55] whatever ocean you're swimming across

[25:58] however valley low

[26:01] i'm right here i've been right here all

[26:05] this time

[26:13] and i'll walk with you even if it's up

[26:17] hill

[26:20] i'll walk with you even if it's up you

[26:29] [Applause]

[26:32] oh

[26:36] thank you thank you thank you

[26:39] [Applause]

[26:43] thank you

[26:43] [Music]

[26:49] so that's side a right that's side a of

[26:51] the record i think

[26:52] right okay um so turn your record over

[26:57] take a drink turn your record over

[27:09] it's just water

[27:13] as you can see the bottle was a gift and

[27:16] it does say my name on it so

[27:18] um it was very sweet it tastes really

[27:22] um like something you should drink when

[27:24] you sing too so i might have a sip in a

[27:26] minute

[27:28] so this next song i wrote with liz rose

[27:30] and hillary lindsay in nashville

[27:32] tennessee one day

[27:34] it started with a conversation that i

[27:36] had with my husband

[27:38] jean mckenna um who works at the gas

[27:40] company

[27:41] and he um he called me one afternoon to

[27:45] tell me that he was going to

[27:47] be working late and i was he's been

[27:49] we've been married for

[27:51] 31 years or something like that and he's

[27:54] been working at the gas company for like

[27:55] 29 years or something like that and he

[27:59] called to say that he was working late

[28:00] and i

[28:01] and i was like still working overtime

[28:03] there there's jim mckenna still working

[28:05] overtime

[28:06] and um and then it just got me thinking

[28:08] about like all the things that you know

[28:10] you're still

[28:11] um doing um good and bad

[28:15] because it's worth it in a relationship

[28:17] and i have learned as i

[28:18] i as i've been getting older that these

[28:21] things that sometimes are your most

[28:23] difficult

[28:24] things in a relationship can get you to

[28:26] um the next beautiful place

[28:28] so that's what the the idea for good

[28:31] fight

[28:31] started and i brought it to liz and

[28:33] hillary and had a ball

[28:36] writing this one with them hillary sings

[28:38] on it with me

[28:39] on the record and um might be one of the

[28:42] fastest songs i've ever recorded i'm not

[28:43] sure maybe there's one faster

[28:45] or two but it's not a ballad so that's

[28:48] quite remarkable really

[28:57] exactly

[29:08] [Music]

[29:13] we sat on the front board still

[29:17] too angry to go to bed

[29:20] sweating the last three bears

[29:27] [Music]

[29:36] don't make me laugh cause you ain't

[29:40] [Music]

[29:50] still making a long

[29:54] still working over time

[30:21] good

[30:24] so easy to fall in love

[30:28] so easy to let it go

[30:30] [Music]

[30:32] so easy to give it up

[30:37] [Music]

[30:49] is

[30:50] still working overtime

[30:54] still lying by your side

[31:02] still staying up

[31:04] [Music]

[31:28] still making me crazy

[31:34] [Music]

[31:43] still staying up all night

[31:50] [Music]

[31:58] still a good fight

[32:14] [Music]

[32:18] [Laughter]

[32:20] that was just so that's how i did it you

[32:23] just can't let it resolve

[32:25] it's got to have a was brilliant because

[32:29] i went to the four and mark went to the

[32:31] one and

[32:31] that's what he was supposed to do but

[32:33] when i make a mistake i look at mark as

[32:35] if he's made a mistake

[32:36] it's this look that i have crafted over

[32:38] the past 20 years

[32:40] i went triumphantly to the one too i was

[32:42] just like

[32:43] because you had confidence in me i saw

[32:45] it in your eyes

[32:46] you had confidence in me and you thought

[32:48] i knew what i was doing

[32:50] i always do always have confidence and

[32:52] sometimes i don't know if you do but

[32:54] that time you did and you were wrong

[32:57] i got burnt

[32:57] [Laughter]

[33:00] oh but i could see the hope that was

[33:03] there it was really sweet of you it's

[33:05] good i haven't lost it all yet

[33:08] um we've never played these songs before

[33:12] this is the first time

[33:14] this is the first time um so and it's so

[33:17] nice to be

[33:18] in this room and thank you matt for

[33:20] having us

[33:21] in my beloved home away from home

[33:26] you're getting me this mckenna alcohol

[33:38] wow yeah that's did you try it i just

[33:42] it's really good i think

[33:47] you know what it is what is it is it

[33:50] it's uh is it a whiskey yeah the whiskey

[33:54] that's what they mean about the burn

[33:56] that burn i've been writing about all

[33:57] this time

[33:58] this is it right

[34:01] i was putting together some ikea

[34:02] furniture earlier today i could have

[34:04] used some of this

[34:06] would have helped

[34:12] i'm supposed to chase it with something

[34:13] right as a beer as that would have be

[34:16] what is a chain what is a standard

[34:18] chaser i'm not gonna do it i'm just

[34:20] asking

[34:20] like a standard beer okay

[34:23] that would just be a lot of problems

[34:25] how'd you do with your ikea furniture

[34:27] it's all it's all put together good job

[34:30] i meant to ask you

[34:31] about that it's not my first swedish

[34:32] rodeo as they say

[34:38] oh that's right i've put together my

[34:41] share of ikea furniture

[34:44] um i hope everybody out there is good i

[34:46] hope you're putting up with me thank you

[34:48] so much for doing so if you are

[34:51] um

[34:55] i live in a town called soap

[34:56] massachusetts beautiful stoke

[34:58] massachusetts 20 miles south of

[35:01] boston where i get my southern twang

[35:12] i started sort of faking a southern

[35:13] accent a long time ago when i started

[35:15] recording because my stoughton accent

[35:17] was so

[35:18] thick and i wasn't pronouncing

[35:21] most words correctly or at least some so

[35:24] when i started singing

[35:26] in order to get those r's and letters i

[35:29] had been avoiding all this time i

[35:31] ended up with a bit of a southern accent

[35:34] which i um

[35:36] just i i wear all the time it's just i

[35:39] enjoy it

[35:41] but um but i am a i am a townie and uh

[35:45] my husband i live in the town that we

[35:46] grew up in and

[35:47] this past year or was it the year before

[35:49] perhaps julie would know

[35:51] um they the high school that we went to

[35:54] um was removed in a new one

[35:58] is in its and it is in its place and um

[36:03] watching that watching that building

[36:05] come down

[36:07] over the course of a summer as they were

[36:10] building the new one just watching it

[36:11] come down piece by

[36:12] piece inspired this song about how i am

[36:14] a little bit

[36:16] stuck in high school and so here it is

[36:36] [Music]

[36:39] those memories with drugstore sunglasses

[36:43] i never liked warm beer cigarettes

[36:48] i liked watching the smoke clear the

[36:51] high school fence

[36:52] [Music]

[36:53] i am a self-described black sheep

[36:57] self-describing dinner raised by the

[37:00] village of my peers in the back seats of

[37:03] used cars it took a long time for my

[37:06] feet to

[37:08] [Music]

[37:19] some good man baby born they said the

[37:22] better ones

[37:23] are me so you try on every shield

[37:26] when you stand in every shadow hope you

[37:29] find yourself somewhere between the

[37:32] first

[37:32] few and the back row but you're always

[37:35] scared

[37:37] [Music]

[37:44] did you ever make those dreams come true

[37:48] or is a kid still waiting

[37:54] can't still wait

[37:56] [Music]

[37:59] god bless

[38:03] my daddy's kitchen if he was scared he'd

[38:06] never tell but i sure as hell did listen

[38:09] and it don't matter how many prayers

[38:12] ever came off my lips

[38:15] i still learned how to curse just like

[38:18] he did cause you get in the cradle

[38:22] you can't tell the grave some of them

[38:25] and they be born they said the better

[38:28] ones

[38:28] are me sweet giant

[38:33] [Music]

[38:45] in the hallway 18 and graduating

[38:50] did you ever make those dreams come true

[39:01] [Music]

[39:21] i'm a little stuck

[39:31] [Applause]

[39:31] [Music]

[39:33] thank you guys

[39:37] see i like the floor it's my favorite i

[39:40] remembered halfway through that song

[39:42] that my

[39:42] dad has these um has our graduation

[39:45] pictures

[39:46] amanda's of six and and he has our

[39:48] graduation pictures

[39:50] lined up in the in the living room in

[39:52] order you know

[39:54] bobby donald richie david marie lori

[39:57] and um and it did occur to me one day

[40:01] when i was looking at all those kids up

[40:02] there

[40:04] the whole idea of

[40:07] what we tell ourselves then and what we

[40:09] promise ourselves then and

[40:12] what we what would we tell that kid now

[40:19] the haircuts are pretty interesting in

[40:21] those photos

[40:23] especially the 70s the ones back in the

[40:25] 70s

[40:26] not that the 80s are actually not

[40:28] something i'm looking at for me like oh

[40:30] yeah the 80's pretty tough too with the

[40:31] hair

[40:33] i worked a long time on my hair in the

[40:34] 80s i know that one little

[40:47] oh no you're right wait a minute you are

[40:49] you're good

[40:50] you're good yeah wait a minute did what

[40:53] you're right

[40:54] let me say it on the microphone you are

[40:56] right that has never

[40:57] okay that deserves a drinking game right

[40:59] there

[41:01] if you want to stay sober that's your

[41:02] drinking game the one time laurie's

[41:05] right

[41:06] that's great um i think i'm here though

[41:09] right

[41:10] you are okay yep i'll tell the story

[41:13] um so this next song i wrote again was

[41:15] liz rose and hillary lindsay

[41:17] and i um i did start it

[41:20] at home a little bit i had the first

[41:22] verse a little bit of the

[41:24] little bit of the last verse in there um

[41:27] and i could not

[41:28] for the life of me find a chorus

[41:32] to this song the song started with david

[41:35] letterman

[41:35] um interviewing harvard stern

[41:39] on a show that i saw and david letterman

[41:41] says to howard stern

[41:43] you know they're talking about the world

[41:45] and david letterman says

[41:46] my son's 14 years old what's the world

[41:48] going to be like when he's my age

[41:51] and it just struck me and i wrote down

[41:53] when you're my age

[41:54] and got the first verse

[41:57] and then over like the course of a month

[42:01] a little bit of the of the last verse

[42:04] and still i couldn't figure out

[42:05] how to make it believe it or not i

[42:07] couldn't figure out how to make it

[42:10] even as happy as it is i think i was

[42:12] going even sadder

[42:14] and sometimes i'll even be able to stop

[42:15] myself like no no one ever wants to hear

[42:18] this

[42:18] so um i brought it to liz and hillary i

[42:21] brought him i sang them the first

[42:23] verse one afternoon um after we had

[42:27] already written a song together and i

[42:28] was like hey will you guys help me with

[42:29] this and i played them in the first

[42:30] verse and

[42:31] hillary was like no no no no no no like

[42:34] you need to do that yourself

[42:36] that's just like that's a laurie song

[42:38] just

[42:39] and liz started singing the chorus

[42:43] um and

[42:46] we just you know she just fell into it

[42:48] and started singing it

[42:50] and we still didn't know how to end it i

[42:52] didn't ever think to go back to when

[42:54] you're my age i didn't ever think to go

[42:55] back to that line

[42:57] for the hook of the song and then

[42:59] hillary said well you could say

[43:00] you know you're always going to be my

[43:02] baby even when you're my age and she was

[43:04] kind of rolling her eyes at herself

[43:06] and as soon as she said it we were like

[43:09] what

[43:10] what did you say and um and then we all

[43:13] just started we sang it and then we all

[43:14] just started crying and

[43:16] liz has uh three children and two

[43:18] grandchildren hillary has a

[43:19] four-year-old little baby

[43:21] and i have five children all over the

[43:22] place so we each find ourselves

[43:24] as moms in this song and i was so happy

[43:28] that i got to write it with liz and

[43:30] hillary i was so glad that they came in

[43:32] the studio and sang it with me

[43:34] um we all just cried and um

[43:37] and we wrote this song for each other

[43:40] and for

[43:41] um and for ourselves and this is when

[43:43] you're my age

[43:57] [Music]

[44:04] when you might i hope the world is

[44:08] kinder

[44:11] than it seems to be right

[44:14] now and i hope the front page

[44:20] isn't just a reminder

[44:25] if i would keep letting each other down

[44:32] when i was your age things didn't seem

[44:35] to be this hard

[44:39] riding bikes out on the street

[44:42] playing tag in the backyard

[44:50] [Music]

[44:56] [Music]

[44:59] just don't forget

[45:02] when you're all grown up

[45:05] but you don't feel that way

[45:09] you're still gonna be my baby

[45:19] even when you're my

[45:37] still be full of questions

[45:41] that i wish i had the answers to

[45:45] right now

[45:48] and those dark times might make you

[45:52] second guessing

[45:55] but i bet love will still be making the

[45:59] world

[46:00] [Music]

[46:04] i didn't worry like i think you do

[46:07] [Music]

[46:09] back then in a sense

[46:15] [Music]

[46:27] without

[46:29] [Music]

[46:40] you're still gonna be my baby

[47:05] you have kids someday i hope you teach

[47:08] some

[47:08] lord's prayer

[47:12] before they go to bed

[47:15] at night

[47:16] [Music]

[47:18] like my daddy did for me and his

[47:22] mother before him

[47:25] well something bout it just keeps you

[47:29] right

[47:32] and i hope you don't work too much over

[47:37] time

[47:39] so they can be right there beside them

[47:43] [Music]

[47:51] cause they'll outgrow their shoes

[47:55] they'll outgrow the beds

[47:58] they'll outgrow that house

[48:02] and you can't stop it

[48:05] [Music]

[48:18] just like you're still gonna be

[48:22] my baby

[48:26] [Music]

[48:29] even when you're my

[48:36] even when you're mine

[48:50] oh man thank you thank you thank you

[49:02] songs

[49:03] songs

[49:07] thank you marcorelli you're amazing

[49:18] just literally happy to be here

[49:22] i am too um again thank you um

[49:25] so much you guys for letting us just

[49:28] crash in here and

[49:29] and set up and everyone's been so

[49:31] careful and so

[49:33] um you know just sympathetic to

[49:36] everybody else's

[49:38] um space and needs and it's just been

[49:40] awesome

[49:41] hanging out here this afternoon and we

[49:43] missed it for sure

[49:49] [Music]

[49:51] and releasing the record i thought

[49:54] [Music]

[49:57] i couldn't think of a better place

[49:58] honestly to um to just

[50:00] sing sing this record down for you it's

[50:02] been we recorded this um

[50:04] early last winter uh in nashville dave

[50:07] cobb produces

[50:08] this record for me again um so this is

[50:10] the third record i've made with dave

[50:12] and and the band that um that he uses

[50:15] and um

[50:16] and these remarkable guys um brian allen

[50:19] on base and chris powell on drums and

[50:21] phillip towns on piano and dave cobb on

[50:24] on everything else and and we just had a

[50:27] ball

[50:28] um just exploring these songs and

[50:32] putting them all together

[50:33] and it just seems like a whole it seems

[50:35] like a million years ago

[50:37] and it and yesterday kind of at the same

[50:39] time like my

[50:41] my um my sense of time is not as strong

[50:45] as it used to be

[50:46] um in all this it definitely um lost

[50:49] some sense of time but this was a

[50:51] a newer song to the batch maybe one of

[50:53] the newest songs that were written

[50:54] um before we went in to cut this record

[50:57] and i wrote it again

[50:59] it's a love junkie song i wrote it with

[51:00] liz and hillary and

[51:02] it just started with the title which is

[51:04] you know the idea of twisting two birds

[51:06] one stone into

[51:07] a love triangle of of sorts

[51:12] this one's called two birds

[51:23] [Music]

[51:29] one was a red dress a wild one from my

[51:33] whis

[51:34] didn't waste a minute with her heart

[51:38] [Music]

[51:39] the other was a bloomberg careful with

[51:43] her sweet words

[51:45] unless she lets you hold her in the dark

[51:51] [Music]

[51:57] [Music]

[52:02] one god is

[52:08] [Music]

[52:16] one got to say

[52:19] [Music]

[52:28] [Music]

[52:35] [Music]

[52:40] one song

[52:42] [Music]

[52:58] it wasn't me but he had a way of

[53:01] breaking things

[53:16] [Music]

[53:22] one got to say

[58:37] last song on the record and then we're

[58:39] going to

[58:39] let you go find something happy to

[58:42] listen to

[58:45] but thank you all so much again um this

[58:48] song

[58:48] started with my daughter megan

[58:52] she just graduated high school this year

[58:55] and she came home

[58:56] she came home from school one day last

[58:59] year

[58:59] and she was just exhausted from school

[59:03] and she walked in i could just see the

[59:04] look on her face and i was like what's

[59:06] up

[59:06] and she said that b2 hallway

[59:10] is killing me and

[59:13] in the old stone high school the b2

[59:15] hallway was the one was the main hallway

[59:17] that sort of went out to the to the gym

[59:20] side of the school where the one of the

[59:22] parking lots the offices over there that

[59:24] it's kind of like the main hallway that

[59:26] you

[59:27] you see when you walk in and i know that

[59:29] hallway

[59:30] really well and i suddenly could just

[59:32] like picture myself

[59:34] walking down that hallway and i

[59:35] literally could see like

[59:37] patty moore standing outside her algebra

[59:39] class

[59:40] next to the girls you know room and home

[59:44] ac and all these things um

[59:47] and it just occurred to me that megan

[59:49] was in a rush

[59:50] and she um she probably needed to slow

[59:53] down a little bit

[59:54] because all this stuff goes by really

[59:56] fast so i wrote her this song

[59:58] and i sang it in my iphone and i texted

[1:00:01] it to her

[1:00:02] and she was standing next to me in the

[1:00:04] kitchen and i said kitchen

[1:00:06] um and i said one more kitchen

[1:00:09] uh and i said i just texted you a song

[1:00:13] if you don't like it i won't play

[1:00:14] it and she went upstairs to listen and

[1:00:17] she came back down and she said you can

[1:00:19] play it it's okay so

[1:00:24] this one's called till you groan and

[1:00:25] thank you all so much so very much again

[1:00:29] for hanging out

[1:00:31] [Music]

[1:00:33] smoking won't seem so cool the little

[1:00:36] white

[1:00:36] church won't feel so big this town won't

[1:00:40] look so small as soon as you ain't still

[1:00:44] a kid

[1:00:45] that high school won't be so long you

[1:00:48] won't want to get down

[1:00:50] it so fast working a saturday won't kill

[1:00:55] you

[1:00:56] friday night won't be all you have

[1:00:59] you'll understand when you're older

[1:01:04] and get out there on your own

[1:01:11] how time really flies it

[1:01:15] ain't there

[1:01:18] don't see it till you grow

[1:01:24] [Music]

[1:01:31] don't see it to your room

[1:01:38] [Music]

[1:01:46] daddy's hands won't feel so rough

[1:01:49] and his feels won't seem

[1:01:52] [Music]

[1:01:59] that break up ain't gonna break you

[1:02:02] it's gonna sting a while no doubt and

[1:02:06] that tattoo

[1:02:07] will be stupid you think your lucky

[1:02:10] stars that you're chickened out

[1:02:18] have children

[1:02:20] [Music]

[1:03:28] parking lot won't be

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

McKenna describes starting with something that catches her attention—a word or image—and then following the creative constraints of rhyme and narrative logic to let the character reveal itself organically rather than imposing a predetermined story. She notes that the character often takes unexpected turns because of what the rhyme scheme demands, which keeps the process responsive and alive.
Yes, according to McKenna's practice: specificity—concrete details like pictures on walls, the size of shoes, a father's hands—actually deepens a song's reach rather than limiting it. When grief is rendered through vivid, particular imagery and emotional precision, listeners recognize the universal human experience of loss even if the biographical details differ from their own.
McKenna uses specific locations—kitchens, back porches, bleachers, freeway stretches—to ground emotional experience in material reality. Place isn't decoration; it's a container for meaning that makes abstract feelings tangible and recognizable, helping listeners locate themselves in the song's world.
McKenna performs songs about her sister in front of her sister, and includes real family members in songs, suggesting that art and authentic relationships can coexist. The song becomes a public acknowledgment and honoring of private bonds, with craft and revision still shaping the final form.
McKenna credits her band and featured vocalists throughout the performance, emphasizing that songs are communal creations shaped by the voices and interpretive choices of collaborators. The same song recorded with different singers produces different meanings and resonances.
Club Passim uses its nonprofit structure to prioritize cultural continuity and community over pure commercial logic, offering artist relief grants and creating space for performances that might not be commercially viable elsewhere. The suggested donation model acknowledges that listeners have a role in sustaining music and community.
