How Do You Want toFeel? The Goal-Setting Revolution

Danielle LaPorte

Danielle LaPorte's transformation around goal-setting began with a collision between ambition and exhaustion. She was chasing targets, hitting milestones, doing things to herself—forcing, pushing, ignoring her body's signals—all in service of goals that weren't actually making her feel good. The revelation was simple and seismic: she'd been working backward. "I wasn't feeling the way I really wanted to feel," she explains, and that misalignment wasn't a side effect of success; it was the problem itself. Her goals had eclipsed what her body was saying, what her energy could sustain, what her life actually needed.

What emerged from that collision is a complete inversion of how most of us approach achievement. Rather than set a goal—get the promotion, lose the weight, write the book, build the business—and hope to feel good about it once we achieve it, LaPorte argues we should begin with a radically different question: How do you want to feel?

Leer · 7 secciones

How One Question Changes Everything

This isn't navel-gazing or self-indulgent introspection. It's the spine of every choice you make. "Everything that you're doing—what you're eating, what you're bringing into your home, how you dress, who you hang out with, what you say at the boardroom table—is because you want to feel a certain way," LaPorte says. And yet most people never ask themselves the question directly. We inherit default settings from culture, family, and fear. We chase goals that have more to do with being liked than with aliveness. We pursue achievements because they're what we're supposed to want, not because they move us toward how we actually want to feel.

The insight cuts deeper than typical motivation theory. It's not about willpower or strategy. It's about alignment. When you can name the feeling you're after—is it freedom? Aliveness? Contribution? Safety?—suddenly thousands of daily decisions become legible. That 6 a.m. workout you're forcing yourself through—does it move you toward your desired feeling, or away from it? That job that pays well but leaves you drained—is it aligned? That social obligation that exhausts you—why are you saying yes?

"The question 'How do you want to feel?' is the most basic, primal and divine question that you can ask yourself. It's potentially revolutionary for a lot of people, especially when we live in a culture that's all about sucking it up and enduring."

It's revolutionary precisely because we're trained to ignore our internal cues. We're taught to suck it up, push through, override what our adrenals are screaming. That tightness in your chest when you're overcommitted? That fog that settles when you're not honoring yourself? We've been taught these are weakness signals to suppress, not wisdom signals to heed. But LaPorte inverts that completely. Your body isn't the obstacle to your goals—it's the compass to your real ones.

But here's where it gets practical: once you know how you want to feel, you have a filter for decision-making. It's not that life becomes simple or easy. It's that you're making choices consciously, in alignment with your own values, rather than following inherited scripts or cultural defaults.

Why Most Goal-Setting Fails

The traditional achievement model promises a sequence: deny yourself now, suffer productively, collect external validation (the promotion, the award, the number on the scale), and then feel good. You'll be happy when. You'll relax when. You'll feel worthy when.

But LaPorte's observation was that this model creates a peculiar trap. By the time you achieve the goal, you've often spent so much energy overriding yourself—ignoring your body, sacrificing relationships, grinding without joy—that the achievement itself can't deliver the feeling you promised yourself. You've taught yourself not to feel good. And so you set another goal, and another, on the same exhausting logic.

This is the unseen cost: methodology matters as much as outcome. If your goal requires you to betray yourself—to ignore your body's wisdom, to treat people poorly, to sacrifice your integrity—then the goal itself is compromised. You'll have achieved something, but at the cost of the very feeling you were after. The path shapes the destination.

This is where the framework inverts completely. Instead of feeling good as the reward at the end, feeling good becomes the pathway itself.

How Do You Delight Your Way to Delight?

"You have to delight your way to delight. What if joy is the aspiration? You've got to make joyful choices today because your choices today are going to create your tomorrow."

This is the practice that keeps the framework from becoming abstract philosophy. If you want to feel joyful, the only pathway there is through making joyful choices now—in how you move your body, what you eat, who you spend time with, the boundaries you set, the work you prioritize. Not as a reward for future achievement, but as the actual vehicle. You're not waiting to arrive at joy; you're traveling there every day.

A concrete example: if one of your core values is freedom, and freedom means spaciousness and time for what matters, then your daily choices need to reflect that. Which means saying no to commitments that fragment your attention. Which means protecting morning silence, or evening solitude, or whatever form freedom takes for you. You're not delaying joy until you've "made it"—you're building the infrastructure of joy now, through thousands of small choices that align with your aspiration.

This doesn't mean the hard stuff disappears. It means you're enduring the hard stuff for reasons that actually matter to you, not for external metrics that don't feed your soul. There's still work, still challenge, still difficulty. But it's chosen difficulty, difficulty in service of something you genuinely care about.

Can You Create Reality and Still Leave Room for Mystery?

LaPorte is clear-eyed about the New Age tendency to claim unlimited power to manifest anything through positive thinking alone. "We're constantly creating our reality—agreed," she says. "But you've got to leave room for mystery."

Not everything that happens to you is your fault or your manifestation. You don't control circumstances, accidents, loss, illness, or the behavior of others. Some things are simply beyond your agency. Claiming you created your suffering can be both false and cruel—a way of blaming the victim for their own pain.

What you do control is your emotional response. "You get to choose how you feel about everything that happens to you." This is where real responsibility lives—not in explaining away suffering as your manifestation, but in claiming ownership of your inner state even in circumstances you didn't choose. This agency doesn't bypass difficulty or make it fair; it moves you from victim to active participant even in situations you can't control.

"And that in a very roundabout but essential way, it goes back to your goals and your aspirations."

Because if you're taking responsibility for how you feel about what happens, you're also taking responsibility for the choices you make in response. You're not waiting for life to change; you're changing how you meet life. This distinction—between creating circumstances and creating your relationship to circumstances—is the wisdom check that keeps the framework from becoming magical thinking.

Freedom as the Organizing Principle

For LaPorte, "living a healthy life is about freedom." Everything else—her priorities, her choices, her boundaries—traces back to that core value. Freedom informs how she shows up in her work, what she asks for, what she offers, and crucially, what she declines.

And she declines constantly. "I say no to 80 percent, probably more, of what comes my way, so that I can do what really matters most to me."

This is the practice that locks in the philosophy. It's not enough to know how you want to feel; you have to make choices that defend that feeling. Every yes is a no to something else. Most people default to saying yes to everything, protecting only the scraps of time and energy for what actually matters. LaPorte inverts it. She says no by default to anything that doesn't align with her core values, which protects space for presence, for joy, for the work that only she can do.

This radical selectivity is what makes the "how do you want to feel" question more than reflective exercise. It becomes a decision-making filter. The ask that doesn't align with your desired feeling? No. The social obligation that drains you? No. The opportunity that sounds impressive but doesn't feed your soul? No. And by protecting that 20%, you create the conditions where the 20% can actually flourish. You're not being selfish; you're being responsible for your own aliveness, which is the only way you can genuinely show up for others.

How Do You Integrate Body, Life, and Mind?

Wellness, in this framework, isn't siloed into fitness, productivity, and meditation—separate domains you manage independently. "I work just as devotedly to have a clean body and a clean life as I do a clean mind," LaPorte explains. There's contemplation and silence (the clean mind), but also what she calls "a lot of rock and roll"—the vitality of being alive and present. These aren't contradictions; they're frequencies of the same tuning.

A clean body means moving with intention, eating what nourishes you, honoring rest when your system needs it. A clean life means eliminating what doesn't serve you—the draining relationships, the toxic obligations, the numbing habits, the overscheduling that fragments your presence. A clean mind means sitting with yourself in silence, processing, allowing space for insight without constant stimulation.

Together, they create the conditions for the feeling you're after. When all three are aligned, that's when the feeling you want to cultivate becomes possible. It's not that you meditate your way out of a bad job, or exercise your way out of a draining relationship, or think positively about toxic obligations. It's that you address all three at once, supporting each other. The mind work makes it possible to say no to draining situations. Saying no creates space for the quiet mind. Physical nourishment gives you the energy to honor your boundaries. It's an integrated practice of self-respect.

Where to Go From Here

The invitation is to start small. Name the feeling you're actually after. Not the goal—the feeling beneath it. What does freedom feel like in your body? What does joy sound like? What does peace look like when you wake up in the morning? Get specific and honest.

Then spend a week noticing. Which of your daily choices move you toward that feeling, and which ones create distance? You'll likely find that some of your "important" commitments—the ones you think you should be doing—actually don't serve your core aspiration at all. Those are candidates for the 80% you consider declining.

The framework doesn't promise that everything will align perfectly or that hardship will vanish. It asks you to stop postponing your own aliveness until you've accomplished enough. It asks you to listen to your body, to ask yourself what you actually want to feel, and to make choices today that honor that knowing. That's the revolution—not in what you achieve, but in how alive you are while you're achieving it.

[0:10] aha my like big moment around goal

[0:13] setting was that my goals weren't

[0:18] lighting me up in terms of how I wanted

[0:20] to feel and that I was doing a lot of

[0:22] things to myself to reach my goals that

[0:26] actually weren't nourishing and that the

[0:29] goal was eclipsing what my body was

[0:32] saying or what cash flow was saying and

[0:34] basically I wasn't feeling the way I

[0:37] really wanted to feel the revelation is

[0:40] that everything that you're doing

[0:42] everything you're doing what you're

[0:43] eating what you're bringing into your

[0:45] home how you dress who you hang out with

[0:47] what you say at the boardroom table is

[0:49] because you want to feel a certain way

[0:51] and most of us aren't conscious about

[0:55] how we want to feel and it's the most

[0:58] basic primal and divine question that

[1:04] you can ask yourself how do you want to

[1:06] feel it's potentially revolutionary for

[1:10] a lot of people especially when we live

[1:12] in a culture that's all about sucking it

[1:15] up and enduring and not picking up the

[1:19] cues your adrenals are sending you

[1:22] because you set a goal and usually the

[1:32] you have to delight your way to delight

[1:35] you what if joy is the aspiration you've

[1:37] got to make joyful choices today because

[1:40] your choices today are going to create

[1:42] your tomorrow and really really at the

[1:45] end of the day this is just about being

[1:46] present and really getting in the

[1:49] driver's seat of your life really taking

[1:54] radical responsibility for how you feel

[1:56] how you want to feel you know I think a

[1:59] lot of the belief system and this sort

[2:02] of self help new age space is that you

[2:07] know we're constantly creating our

[2:08] reality

[2:10] agreed we are constantly creating our

[2:13] reality but you've got to leave room for

[2:14] mystery you can't you can't explain away

[2:19] why everything happens to you but you

[2:21] get to choose how you feel about

[2:23] everything that happens to you and that

[2:26] in a very roundabout but essential way

[2:29] it goes back to your goals and your

[2:32] aspirations

[2:36] living a healthy life for me is about

[2:39] freedom and you know everything I all of

[2:43] my priorities always go back to that and

[2:47] freedom for me translates to how I show

[2:51] up here what I ask for

[2:55] there's a lot of No thank yous in my

[2:57] life I say no to 80 percent probably

[3:01] more of what comes my way

[3:03] so that I can do what really matters

[3:06] most to me and you know that's a

[3:09] personal choice to live a really clean

[3:10] life I work just as devotedly to have

[3:15] you know clean body and a clean life as

[3:18] I do a clean mind so there's a lot of

[3:20] contemplation for me there's a lot of

[3:23] silence and there's like a lot of rock

[3:26] and roll yeah I have a great

[3:29] relationship with the light and that's

[3:31] what works

Preguntas Frecuentes

It means making joyful choices today rather than postponing joy until you achieve your goals. Your daily actions create your tomorrow's feelings, so if joy is your aspiration, you must embody it now—in how you move, eat, relate, and rest.
Start by naming the core feeling beneath your goals: freedom, aliveness, peace, contribution, safety. Then evaluate your current choices—your work, relationships, habits, commitments—and notice which ones move you toward that feeling and which ones away from it.
You can't always control your circumstances, but you can choose how you feel about them. That ownership—choosing your emotional response—is where real power lives. This doesn't make hardship fair; it moves you from victim to active participant in your own life.
It means radically prioritizing what matters most by declining 80%+ of opportunities, requests, and obligations that don't align with your core values. This protects the 20% that truly matters and gives it space to flourish.
It doesn't eliminate ambition—it reorients it. You pursue goals, but through methods that nourish you rather than deplete you. The question becomes: can I move toward this goal in a way that aligns with how I want to feel?
No. LaPorte is clear that you can't control everything that happens. You can't manifest away real obstacles or pain. What you control is your emotional response and your daily choices. Creating reality happens through those choices, but only within the scope of what's actually yours to influence.
Because they're interconnected. A clean mind without a clean life means managing stress through meditation while staying in draining situations. Physical health without mental clarity means your body is fit but your joy is absent. Integration means all three align with your desired feeling.
