Two States of Being:Suffering vs. Non-Suffering

Sri Krishnaji presents a foundational teaching: human consciousness exists in only two states—a suffering state and a non-suffering (or "beautiful") state. Rather than navigating countless emotional conditions or psychological layers, this binary framework simplifies the inner landscape. The practical implication is direct: recognizing that you are always in one of these two states allows you to identify suffering patterns and shift into the non-suffering state, where peace, ease, and beauty naturally emerge. This is not a positive-thinking technique but a structural understanding of how consciousness itself operates.

What Are the Two States of Consciousness?

Sri Krishnaji's teaching rests on a radical simplification: all of human experience can be categorized into just two fundamental states. The first is the suffering state—the condition in which stress, anxiety, pain, resistance, and contraction dominate awareness. The second is the non-suffering state, also called the beautiful state—a condition of ease, openness, peace, and natural well-being.

This is not a poetic metaphor but a functional framework for understanding consciousness. When you examine your experience at any moment, you are either in contraction (suffering) or expansion (non-suffering). There is no middle ground, no neutral state that exists independent of these two poles. This simplification cuts through the complexity of psychological analysis that often keeps practitioners trapped in intellectual understanding while remaining stuck in suffering.

The beauty of this binary lies in its clarity. Instead of asking "Why am I anxious?" or "What trauma is causing this reaction?"—questions that can spiral into endless self-interrogation—you ask simply: "Am I in the suffering state or the non-suffering state right now?" From that clarity, a choice becomes possible.

How Does the Suffering State Operate?

The suffering state is not primarily about external circumstances. A person can lose a job, face illness, or experience loss and remain in the non-suffering state. Conversely, someone with perfect external conditions can be locked in the suffering state. The state itself is characterized by resistance, contraction, and identification with problems.

When in the suffering state, the mind creates a story around present experience. It resists what is happening, judges it as wrong or unfair, and then compounds the pain by mentally replaying or forecasting. Stress doesn't come from the event itself but from the mind's resistance to the event. This is why two people in identical situations can have radically different inner experiences—one is in the suffering state, projecting resistance onto the situation, while the other remains in the non-suffering state and responds with clarity.

The suffering state is also self-perpetuating. When you are contracted and stressed, your perception narrows. You see only threats and problems. Your body tenses. Your breathing becomes shallow. Your emotional charge recruits more negative thoughts, which further contracts awareness. What began as a single stressor becomes a full-body, full-mind identification with suffering.

What Characterizes the Non-Suffering or Beautiful State?

The non-suffering state is one of ease, openness, and natural intelligence. In this state, challenges are met with a relaxed awareness that allows for creative response rather than reactive panic. Problems are still present, but they are not contracted into psychological suffering. The mind remains clear, the body remains relaxed, and a natural sense of well-being underlies experience even in the presence of difficulty.

Sri Krishnaji calls this the beautiful state because in it, life appears beautiful. Not because circumstances have changed, but because the quality of consciousness has shifted. Colors appear more vivid. Relationships feel more connected. Even mundane tasks carry a subtle sense of rightness. This is not escapism or denial of genuine pain—it is a shift in the structure of consciousness itself that allows pain to be present without the suffering layer on top of it.

The non-suffering state is also your natural state. When a child looks at a tree, they do not suffer. When you experience genuine happiness, you are not strategizing or contracting. Peace, beauty, and ease are what consciousness defaults to when the suffering mechanisms are not active. The non-suffering state requires no effort to create—only the removal of what is blocking it.

Why Does This Binary Framework Matter?

The two-state model eliminates confusion about what to do with suffering. Many spiritual and psychological approaches assume that suffering is complex, requiring complex solutions—therapy, analysis, meditation practices, or healing work. Sri Krishnaji's teaching suggests something simpler and more direct: you don't need to solve suffering; you need to shift states.

This distinction is crucial. If suffering is a complex psychological knot, you must unravel it, understand it, and process it. This can take years. But if suffering is simply one of two states—and you can recognize it as such—then the path forward is immediate recognition and a deliberate shift into the non-suffering state. The question becomes not "Why am I suffering?" but "Am I willing to leave the suffering state?"

The binary model also removes blame and shame. You are not broken because you suffer. You are simply in a state that all humans oscillate through. The moment you recognize you are in the suffering state, you have already begun to step out of it, because awareness itself creates a gap between the observer and the observed state.

How Does Stress Arise Within This Framework?

Stress is not something that happens to you from external circumstances alone. Stress is the resistance to what is, the refusal to accept present reality, and the mental elaboration around problems. You can face genuine hardship and remain stress-free if you are in the non-suffering state. Conversely, you can be in perfect circumstances and be full of stress if you are in the suffering state.

Sri Krishnaji's teaching implies that stress is a choice, though not a conscious one in the moment. You habitually choose the suffering state through identification with thoughts, resistance to reality, and contraction around problems. The moment you recognize this pattern, you gain the power to choose differently. You can consciously shift into the non-suffering state, where the same circumstances are met with clarity, calm, and natural resilience.

Can You Dissolve Suffering by Shifting States?

Yes, according to this teaching. Dissolving suffering doesn't mean solving all your problems or changing your circumstances. It means removing yourself from the suffering state and residing in the non-suffering state, regardless of external conditions. This is liberation not from circumstances but from the mind's habitual contraction around circumstances.

The dissolution happens through recognition and willingness. First, you recognize that you are in the suffering state. Not all the details of why—just the recognition that you are contracted, resistant, and identified with problems. Second, you exercise the will to shift. This is not forced or artificial. It is simply a matter of relaxing the contraction, letting go of resistance, and allowing consciousness to return to its natural non-suffering state.

As this shift becomes practiced, you begin to live predominantly in the beautiful state. Challenges still arise. Pain still happens. But you no longer add the layer of psychological suffering on top of them. You are free not from difficulty but from suffering about difficulty. This is the actual promise of the teaching—not a life without problems, but a life lived in the non-suffering state where problems are met with clarity, ease, and natural intelligence.

Where to go from here

The immediate application of this teaching is simple and direct: notice right now—are you in the suffering state or the non-suffering state? Don't analyze why. Just observe the quality of your consciousness. If you are in the suffering state, recognize it. Recognize that it is a state you are in, not something you are. Then, with gentle intention, relax the contraction. Let your shoulders drop. Soften your jaw. Allow your breathing to deepen. These physical shifts invite the consciousness to shift as well. As you practice recognizing and shifting states throughout your day, the non-suffering state becomes your baseline. Sri Krishnaji and Sri Preethaji offer further exploration of this and related teachings through the Oneness Movement, including their Oneness Global Summit (July 18-20, 2025), where practitioners gather to deepen understanding and experience of these principles in community.

According to Sri Krishnaji, all human consciousness oscillates between a suffering state (characterized by contraction, stress, and resistance) and a non-suffering or beautiful state (characterized by ease, openness, and peace). There is no neutral or third state—at any moment, you are in one or the other.
Yes. The non-suffering state is not dependent on external circumstances but on the quality of consciousness itself. You can face genuine hardship and remain in the non-suffering state through ease and clarity, or face perfect conditions and be in the suffering state through resistance and contraction.
Observe the quality of your experience directly. In the suffering state, you feel contracted, resistant, stressed, and identified with problems. In the non-suffering state, you feel open, relaxed, at ease, and clear. You don't need analysis—simple observation reveals which state you're in.
Suffering is caused by the mind's resistance to what is, not by the circumstances themselves. Stress is the contraction and refusal to accept present reality, combined with mental elaboration around problems. Two people in identical situations can have different inner experiences depending on which state they're in.
Recognition is the first step—simply notice you are in the suffering state without judgment. Then relax the contraction through physical ease (dropping shoulders, softening jaw, deepening breath) and by letting go of resistance. This gentle shift allows consciousness to naturally return to its default non-suffering state.
No. The non-suffering state doesn't deny problems—it meets them with clarity and natural intelligence rather than with psychological contraction and suffering. Problems are addressed more effectively from the non-suffering state than from the suffering state, because you have access to full awareness and calm.
Pain can be physical or emotional and is sometimes unavoidable. Suffering is the layer of resistance, contraction, and mental elaboration added on top of pain. You can experience pain while remaining in the non-suffering state by accepting what is rather than resisting it.
According to this teaching, living predominantly in the non-suffering state is liberation from the mind's habitual contraction and resistance. Whether this is identical to enlightenment depends on definition, but it represents a fundamental shift in how you relate to experience and consciousness.
