How Refunds Work

When you can self-serve an instant refund, how much comes back, and what happens when an event is canceled.

Refund terms are set by each organizer — BrightStar doesn’t impose a single policy, because a sliding-scale retreat and a sold-out concert have very different needs. What’s consistent is how you request one: pick your event, and we either refund you on the spot (if the organizer enabled self-serve refunds and you’re within the window) or pass your request straight to the organizer for a personal decision.

Requesting a refund

The fastest path:

  1. 1Open “Request a Refund” from the contact page or your tickets
  2. 2Choose the event you bought
  3. 3If the organizer offers instant refunds, you’ll see the exact amount before you confirm
  4. 4If not, send the request and the organizer replies in your Messages — usually within a day or two

A few good things to know

Canceled events are refunded automatically — you don’t need to ask. Rescheduled events keep your ticket valid for the new date; if you can’t make it, ask the organizer about a refund or transfer. Partial refunds can apply when an organizer’s policy returns a percentage closer to the event date — the amount is always shown before you confirm.

Can’t attend but the window has closed? Transferring your ticket to a friend is often faster than a refund — and means your spot still gets used.

Common questions

Can I get a refund on my BrightStar ticket?

It depends on the event. Refund terms are set by each organizer rather than by a single BrightStar policy, because a sliding-scale retreat and a sold-out concert have very different needs. What is consistent is how you ask: you open Request a Refund, choose your event, and either get refunded on the spot or have your request passed to the organizer.

Policies come in two shapes. A flat one returns a single percentage as long as you are at least a set number of days before the event. A sliding one has tiers — a percentage far out, a smaller one closer in, smaller again nearer the date — and BrightStar applies the most generous tier your timing still qualifies for. Which policy applies is resolved in a fixed order: a setting on that specific event first, then the organizer's account-wide default, and only then the platform fallback. That is why two events from the same organizer can differ.

How do I request a refund?

Open Request a Refund from the BrightStar contact page or from your tickets, then choose the event you bought. If the organizer has enabled instant refunds and you are within their window, you will see the exact amount before you confirm. If not, send the request and the organizer will reply in your Messages.

The amount shown is the policy percentage applied to the ticket prices in your order, which is the base the calculation works from. You can also pick which tickets to include rather than refunding the whole order, and any ticket already refunded is refused rather than refunded twice. When you confirm, the refund is issued against the original charge, so it returns to the card you paid with rather than arriving as a credit or a transfer. It usually takes five to ten business days to appear on your statement.

How long does a refund request take?

If the organizer offers self-serve instant refunds and you are within the window, BrightStar refunds you on the spot. Otherwise your request goes to the organizer for a personal decision and they typically reply in your Messages within a day or two.

A request that falls outside the policy does not simply fail. BrightStar opens a thread with the organizer marked as a refund request, attaches the tickets you selected and what they are worth, and includes the reason the automatic path did not apply — so the organizer is deciding with the numbers already in front of them rather than asking you for details first. Their reply arrives in that same thread. An organizer can still grant event credit at this point, even where a cash refund no longer applies.

What happens if the event is canceled?

Canceled events are refunded automatically on BrightStar, so you do not need to submit a request or contact anyone. You will be refunded without asking.

For a cancellation the refunds are issued as a batch against the original charges rather than one request at a time, in small groups with a pause between them, and each buyer receives their own refund confirmation email. A refund that fails on its first attempt — a card since closed, for instance — is retried rather than dropped, up to three times. Every refund is recorded against the cancellation itself, so the full set can be checked and completed rather than left half done.

What if the event is rescheduled to a new date?

Your ticket stays valid for the new date, so there is nothing you need to do if you can still attend. If the new date does not work for you, ask the organizer about a refund or a transfer.

Nothing is reissued when a date moves, because the code on your ticket identifies the event and that individual ticket, not the date — so the same pass keeps working once the event page and reminder emails update to the new time. If you do go on to ask about a refund, sliding-scale policies are measured in days before the event start, so a date pushed further out generally puts you back into a more generous band rather than a stricter one.

Will I get the full amount back?

Not always, because the amount follows the organizer's policy. Partial refunds can apply where an organizer's policy returns a percentage that decreases closer to the event date. When a self-serve refund is available, BrightStar always shows you the exact amount before you confirm.

There is one rule that only ever moves in your favour. Where the organizer is relying on their account-wide default and the policy would return less than the full amount, BrightStar checks whether anyone is still waiting for a place on that event; if the freed spot is likely to be taken, the refund is raised to the full amount. Where the refund window has closed entirely, an organizer's policy may still return the value as event credit rather than nothing at all.
