Shantala is not a person but a collaboration—a musical partnership between Benjy and Heather Wertheimer that has quietly shaped the landscape of devotional music in North America for more than two decades. Since 2001, the duo has led Sanskrit chant and kirtan gatherings that privilege stillness over spectacle, creating what amounts to a contemplative alternative within a genre that can sometimes favor energy and volume above all else.

Their work occupies an interesting position. They are part of the cohort that brought kirtan—the call-and-response devotional singing rooted in Indian bhakti traditions—into mainstream Western consciousness. Yet they have never been its loudest evangelists. Instead, Shantala has cultivated a practice defined by patience, spaciousness, and the willingness to let a single phrase settle into the room before reaching for the next.
