Where to Start with Nirodha: A Beginner's Guide

The Best Entry Point: Surya

Start with Surya. It pairs nylon-string guitar with tanpura, and it is the most direct way into what Nirodha does. There are no words to follow and nothing to decode, so you can't get the listening wrong. The tanpura holds a steady drone underneath, the guitar moves above it, and your attention has somewhere gentle to rest.

Nirodha is the project of Daniel Espada, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator based in Madrid. He chooses instruments that can hold a single tone without demanding attention, and Surya shows that principle most plainly. Play it start to finish at low volume, without doing anything else.

The Next Three Places to Go

**1. Chants from the Heart.** This is the voice-led side of the work: Sanskrit mantras set to harmonium, voice and silence. Go here second, once the instrumental sound feels familiar. The silences are part of the composition, so don't skip ahead when the music stops.

**2. Night Sanctuary.** This album is still in progress, released one track at a time, and features native Latin American flute for sleep. Play whatever is available at bedtime. Because it is unfinished, you can follow it as it grows.

3. Daniel's guided sessions on Insight Timer. More than 12,000 people follow his work there, and he offers guided sleep and meditation sessions alongside the music. This is the place to hear him guide you directly rather than only play.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect very little to happen, and expect that to be the point. The music doesn't build to a climax or ask for your attention. A single tone is held, an instrument enters, and it recedes. On a first listen you may feel restless, or even bored, before anything settles. That is a normal response to music designed for a busy mind.

Daniel records alone, mostly at night, with whatever instrument gets out of the way fastest. The recordings have that quality: unhurried, close, and unperformed.

The mantra material will sound unfamiliar if you haven't met kirtan before. You don't need to understand the Sanskrit to begin. Let the sound reach you first, and humming along is fine.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"This is just sleep music." Sleep is one thread, but the other is voice-led mantra and kirtan, and the instrumental pieces are also made for stillness while awake. Treating all of it as background for dozing misses half the work.

"I need to know Sanskrit or practice yoga first." You don't. The name comes from the Sanskrit word for cessation, the stilling of mental noise, but the music asks for listening, not credentials.

"I'm supposed to achieve stillness." Daniel's guiding thought is that stillness isn't something you achieve but something you remember. If you spend a session grading yourself on whether you're calm yet, you've turned a remembering into a task. Let the sound do the work and notice when your mind wanders.

"It's passive, so it's not real practice." Kirtan is participatory by nature. If you only ever listen, try singing along with Chants from the Heart at least once.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land when your mind is loudest: the nights you lie awake replaying the day, the stretches of heavy work or worry when you can't switch off, or the transitions when old routines have fallen away and nothing has replaced them. It also suits people who find silent meditation too bare. A drone gives the mind something to lean on without giving it something to chase.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Play Surya in full, sitting, low volume, no phone.

Day 2: Play Surya again while doing something quiet, like washing up or walking.

Day 3: Listen to Chants from the Heart in the evening. Stay through the silences.

Day 4: Play Chants from the Heart again and hum or sing along on one piece.

Day 5: Put on a Night Sanctuary track as you go to bed. Leave the phone across the room.

Day 6: Try one of Daniel's guided sleep or meditation sessions on Insight Timer.

Day 7: Choose the one you returned to most, and repeat it without any agenda. Notice what you remember, not what you achieved.

After a week, you'll know which thread is yours: the guitar and tanpura, the voice, or the flute at night. Follow that one.
