Where to Start with MARTH .: A Beginner's Guide

A note on sources: the material available on MARTH . is thin. It is a teaching practice, Meditate With Martha, led by Martha Castro, plus a set of six singles released on the same day. I recommend only what exists in that record and won't invent details about sound, lyrics, or lectures.

The Single Best Entry Point

Start with a live group session of Meditate With Martha, the online initiative Castro built to make guided meditation as accessible as possible. It is the clearest expression of what she does, and it needs no equipment, experience, or belief.

A typical class opens with a 15 to 20 minute guided meditation, leaves room for comments and questions, then closes with another short meditation. Attend one from start to finish, including the discussion. The guidance is where her fifteen-plus years of practice with her root teacher, Lama Lhanang Rinpoche, show up most directly, and the Q&A is where you see how she handles real beginner confusion.

The Next Two or Three Places to Go

Go back to the same session format a second time. Meditation rewards repetition more than variety. The second class will feel different from the first because you know the structure and can relax into it.

Then try the singles. Six were released on September 18, 2026: "402," "Futari," "kazumi," "Side B," "Bluescreen," and "Sequin." I can't tell you how they connect to the teaching, or whether they are meant to. Treat them as a separate door into the same name. Since there's no stated order, I'd begin with "402" and move through the rest as they appear, one per sitting, with nothing else going on. Each is one track, so the commitment is small.

Finally, bring a question to a live class. Once you've attended a few times, use the comment period. Castro's background in grief counseling and in arts and literature suggests she is well placed to answer questions that go beyond technique.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect structure and a modest scale. You are not walking into a retreat or a lecture series. You get a guided sit, a conversation, and another short sit, all from your own home, in the company of other people practicing at the same time.

Expect the pitch to be simplicity. Her stated aim is helping people live in the present moment and enjoy life "with simplicity and grace." Plan on instruction that is plain and practical rather than ornate, even though it comes from the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition, specifically the Nyingma lineage.

Expect your mind to wander and to feel restless in the first session. That is the normal starting condition, not evidence you're doing it wrong.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"I need to be a Buddhist." Castro's background is deep in Vajrayana, but she also works with universities, elementary schools, businesses, and wellness centers. The teaching is built to travel beyond a religious setting.

"I'll feel calm right away." A guided meditation is practice, not a sedative. The first few sessions often reveal how busy your mind is, which is useful but not always soothing.

"The group part is optional filler." Sitting with a group, even online, is part of the offer. Castro describes the value as learning from her experience and sitting with the group's energy. If you only ever do solo recordings, you miss that.

"The singles are guided meditations." I have no basis for saying that. Don't go in expecting a particular function. Listen without assuming.

"I'm not the type." Her work with elementary schools and businesses suggests a deliberately wide audience. Being a beginner is the expected case.

When This Work Lands Hardest

Based on her background, this is most likely to matter in periods of loss or transition. Her grief counseling experience sits alongside her meditation training, so the practice may land hardest when you are carrying something heavy: a death, an ending, a stretch of overwhelm. It should also suit anyone whose life has become too fast and who wants a regular, low-barrier place to slow down. If you are in acute crisis, a meditation class is not a replacement for professional support.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Attend a full Meditate With Martha session, including the questions portion. Afterward, write down one sentence about how it felt.

Day 2: Rest. Notice whether anything from the session resurfaces on its own.

Day 3: Sit quietly for five minutes on your own, using what you remember from the guidance. Don't judge the result.

Day 4: Listen to "402" with no other activity. Note your reaction without trying to interpret it.

Day 5: Five-minute solo sit again, then listen to "Futari."

Day 6: Listen to "kazumi," then write down one question about practice that came up during the week.

Day 7: Attend another live session and bring that question to the comment period. Afterward, decide honestly whether to continue weekly. If yes, keep the format: one live class, short solo sits between.

By the end of the week you will have a real sense of whether this practice fits you, which is all a starter plan should deliver.
