Brahma Kumaris is a worldwide spiritual movement led by women, dedicated to personal transformation and world renewal through Rajyoga Meditation. It was founded in India and formally established as an institution in October 1937. It has since spread to more than 110 countries on all continents. Its international headquarters are in Mount Abu, Rajasthan.
The movement grew out of a small gathering of friends and relatives around its founder, Dada Lekhraj, known as Brahma Baba, who began sharing spiritual knowledge after a series of visions. The group chanted "Om" together, and was first known as Om Mandali. A trust of eight young women, with Om Radhe as its head, took charge of running the institution.
At the center of its teaching is Rajyoga Meditation, practised with open eyes and described as accessible to people of all backgrounds. The foundation course explores consciousness and self-realisation, the relationship with God, the law of karma, the cycle of time and a spiritual way of life. Its way of life rests on four pillars: study, meditation, practising virtues and service. Its lifestyle disciplines, such as a pure vegetarian diet, are recommended rather than imposed.
Music is part of how Brahma Kumaris shares its teachings. Its YouTube channel, Divine Songs of Brahmakumaris, offers songs, meditation music and divine songs, with devotional and traditional folk music produced by Brahmakumaris Godlywood Studio. Beyond music, the movement serves through meditation centers, retreat centers and a range of service wings, and has worked with the United Nations as an international NGO.
Worth Knowing
Brahma Kumaris is a women-led spiritual movement founded in 1937 in India by Dada Lekhraj (known as Brahma Baba), beginning as a small gathering around his spiritual visions and evolved into a global institution now operating in over 110 countries with international headquarters in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. At its core lies Rajyoga Meditation—a practice described as accessible to people of all backgrounds regardless of religious affiliation—taught alongside structured study of consciousness, karma, and the cyclical nature of time. What sets it apart from many spiritual organizations is its integration of music as a primary teaching vehicle: the movement operates the Godlywood Studio, which produces devotional bhajans and meditation music shared through the Divine Songs of Brahmakumaris YouTube channel and on Spotify. The movement has positioned itself as a substantial institution, working as an international NGO with the United Nations and maintaining formal meditation centers and retreat facilities across continents. People care because Brahma Kumaris offers both a coherent philosophical framework rooted in Vedantic Hinduism and practical daily disciplines—vegetarian diet, meditation practice, virtue cultivation, and service—that followers apply to their lives, not merely abstract teachings.
