Steven Hick is a mindfulness and Dharma teacher with True North Insight, an MBSR teacher trainer, and a former professor of social work. He has more than 40 years of contemplative practice. His approach is grounded, accessible, and rooted in compassion and transformation.
He began practicing yoga and meditation in 1979 and committed fully to the Dharma path in 2005. He trained as a Dharma teacher with Matthew Flickstein and has studied with Thich Nhat Hanh, Adyashanti, Bhagavan Shanmukha, and Florence Meleo-Meyer. He founded the Ottawa Insight Meditation Community and is Director of MBSR Ottawa.
Steven has taught mindfulness to diverse groups, including veterans with PTSD, people experiencing homelessness, and First Nations communities, where he has integrated mindfulness with Indigenous traditions. He holds certification in Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) and mPEAK (Mindfulness Performance Enhancement and Knowledge).
With a PhD in social work, he is the author or co-author of several books, including Mindfulness and the Therapeutic Relationship, Mindfulness and Social Work, and Social Welfare in Canada. His work bridges contemplative practice and social justice. His book Renewing Your Mindfulness Practice is a four-week guide for people who have stepped away from meditation and want to return with compassion and clarity, without judgment or pressure.
His teaching invites a return to what is simple and real, offering mindfulness as a path to clarity, freedom, and compassionate presence in daily life.
