Reggae

A music genre originating in Jamaica in the late 1960s, characterized by offbeat rhythms and strong associations with Rastafari spirituality, social justice, and consciousness.

What is Reggae?

Reggae is a music genre that emerged in Jamaica in the late 1960s, distinguished by its rhythmic emphasis on the offbeat (the “one drop” or “skank”), bass-heavy sound, and thematic focus on social justice, spiritual consciousness, and resistance to oppression. The genre synthesizes elements of earlier Jamaican styles—ska and rocksteady—with African drumming traditions, American rhythm and blues, and Caribbean mento. Reggae became internationally recognized as a vehicle for Rastafari philosophy and Pan-African consciousness, particularly through the work of artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Burning Spear. Beyond its musical characteristics, reggae functions as a cultural and spiritual movement that addresses themes of liberation, unity, and connection to the divine.

Origins & Lineage

Reggae developed in Kingston, Jamaica, between 1968 and 1969 as a slower, more deliberate evolution of rocksteady music. The term “reggae” itself has contested origins; some attribute it to the Jamaican patois word “streggae” (loose woman or ragged clothing), while others link it to “rege-rege,” meaning a quarrel or ragged rhythm. Producer Clancy Eccles and guitarist Ernest Ranglin are among those credited with early usage of the term. Toots and the Maytals’ 1968 single “Do the Reggay” is often cited as the first song to use the word.

The genre’s sonic architecture was shaped by producers like Lee “Scratch” Perry, King Tubby, and Coxsone Dodd, who pioneered studio techniques including reverb-heavy production, prominent basslines, and the “riddim” system (reusing instrumental tracks). The distinctive “one drop” drum pattern—created by drummers like Carlton Barrett of The Wailers—places emphasis on the third beat of each measure, creating reggae’s characteristic loping groove.

Reggae’s spiritual dimension is inseparable from Rastafari, a religious movement that emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s following the coronation of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. Rastafari theology, which views Selassie as the returned messiah and Africa as Zion (the promised land), became reggae’s dominant ideological framework. Artists like Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear used reggae to disseminate Rastafari teachings about repatriation, biblical prophecy, and liberation from “Babylon” (oppressive Western systems).

How It’s Practiced

Reggae is experienced primarily through recorded music and live performance, though its practice extends into lifestyle, spirituality, and community building. Musically, the genre is built on the interplay between bass and drums, with the guitar or keyboard playing short, staccato chords on the offbeat (the “skank”). The bass typically carries the melodic weight, often playing intricate countermelodies. Vocals range from smooth, melodic delivery to rhythmic “toasting” (a precursor to rap).

Lyrically, reggae addresses consciousness, social commentary, romance, and spirituality. Songs frequently incorporate biblical references, particularly from the Psalms and the Book of Revelation, alongside calls for justice, unity, and resistance. The music is often performed at sound system dances, reggae festivals, and concerts where communal participation—through dancing, singing, and the ritual use of cannabis (considered sacramental in Rastafari)—is central.

Many practitioners integrate reggae into spiritual practice alongside meditation, vegetarian or “ital” (natural, unprocessed) dietary principles, and the wearing of dreadlocks. The music serves as both devotional expression and political statement.

Reggae Today

Contemporary seekers encounter reggae through multiple channels: streaming platforms featuring classic roots reggae from the 1970s golden era, modern conscious reggae artists like Chronixx and Protoje, and reggae festivals worldwide. Sound system culture continues in Jamaica and diaspora communities, where DJs and selectors curate reggae sessions combining vintage and contemporary tracks.

Reggae has spawned numerous subgenres including dub (instrumental, effects-heavy versions), dancehall (faster, more digital), and lovers rock (romantic, UK-based style). Roots reggae remains the subgenre most associated with spiritual and conscious themes. Institutions like the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston and annual events like California’s Sierra Nevada World Music Festival preserve and promote reggae’s cultural heritage.

The genre’s influence extends into hip-hop, electronic music, and world music fusion, with artists globally incorporating reggae rhythms and consciousness into diverse contexts. Reggae was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018.

Common Misconceptions

Reggae is not synonymous with all Jamaican music; ska, rocksteady, dancehall, and dub are distinct genres with separate characteristics and histories. Not all reggae is Rastafari-oriented—many artists address secular themes or practice other faiths. The association between reggae and cannabis, while real within Rastafari sacramental practice, does not define the genre and can overshadow its spiritual and political depth.

Reggae is also not monolithic; significant variation exists between roots reggae, lovers rock, digital reggae, and other subgenres. The genre’s association with peace and love can obscure its foundation as protest music addressing colonialism, economic exploitation, and systemic violence.

How to Begin

Start with Bob Marley’s Legend compilation for accessible entry, then explore deeper works like Marley’s Exodus (1977), Burning Spear’s Marcus Garvey (1975), and Peter Tosh’s Legalize It (1976) for roots reggae’s spiritual and political core. For production innovation, investigate Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Super Ape (1976) and King Tubby’s dub mixes.

Read Bass Culture: When Reggae Was King by Lloyd Bradley for comprehensive history, and explore The First Rasta by Hélène Lee for Rastafari context. Seek out local reggae sound systems, festivals, or concerts to experience the music’s communal dimension. Online resources include documentaries like Marley (2012) and Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae (2009) that provide visual and historical context.
